Range hood venting for interior wall?

We are upgrading our kitchen, to include installing a ducted range hood over the stove. The wall where the stove sits is on an interior wall and we have a 2 story house.

I did confirm the ceiling joists run horizontal across the kitchen, so that is a good thing to be able to install the ducting between the joists in the ceiling to the outside.

In order to install the duct work, will they need to remove the entire ceiling drywall between the outside wall and where the new range hood flute will meet the ceiling?

I am just trying to figure out the sequence of how things will need to be done in the kitchen with installation, painting, etc.

You have a couple of choices.

First, You can remove a section of ceiling all the way to the exterior wall, insert the ducting and reinstall drywall.

Second, you can just remove some sections. Insert the metal ducting and thread it through to the wall. Then, patch the open sections.

It's easiest on the installer, probably cheaper from a labor standpoint, to remove the entire run. They can see what they are dealing with and won't run into any surprises.

As far as ceiling repair, it can cost more in labor to do the second method. Either way, it probably won't break the bank.

If it were me, I would open the entire run and plan on a larger section of drywall repair with fewer holes. This way, there are no surprises. You can take care of this at any number of phases of demolition.

Would you be replacing your cabinets in your upgrade? If so, then you could run the ductwork through the top shelf of the cabinets rather than having to open up the ceiling and then repair it. You would need to plan for taller cabinets, but it's an easier and potentially cheaper solution than going through the ceiling.

Homechef, I was afraid you were going to say that. :-)

We are having the kitchen painted and I know that if we have to patch up drywall on the ceiling, the whole ceiling will need to be painted too. If we just paint the patches, then it will stand out from the rest of the kitchen ceiling.

Live wire, no we're not replacing the cabinets. Although I would love to, our budget doesn't allow for it at this time. We are; however, building the tops up to make them taller and painting them.

The only thing those open-top cabinets are good for are collecting dust!

Well then, if you're building up the crown to go to the ceiling, it's simple to just run the duct out on top of the cabinets rather than have to open up the ceilings. Any half skilled HVAC tech can easily do that and you won't have to repair drywall at all!
