Does this area rug work with sofas?

Hi,
I just bought an area rug to coordinate with recently reupholstered 2 love seats (green). Can you let me know what you think? I have till tomorrow to return. I want to use bright accent pillows and some of the photos show that.

Other considerations: The floors will be redone at some point to a medium brown stain and the corner chair will be reupholstered to light gray or ivory (maybe?). We have a traditional house with modern touches.

I think it goes well with the furniture but I think it's too small for the room. I would like to see the furniture sitting on top of the rug. The way it is placed now, with it lining up perfectly with the fireplace and the chair at the other end, it is making the room look like a bowling alley - long and narrow.

Nice room....I like the rug although not sure it works with the green sofas...It does go well with the rest of the room....Then again, I am far from a design expert, I am a newbie to this forum mainly to learn and be inspired by the rest of you...

Technically the colors are there, but in an overall view I think the rug washes out a little, and it's a little small.

Thank you very much - blfenton, sofia and palimpsest.

Funny that I didn't see the size issue until you mentioned it. I think that I am still okay with the size, but am going to really look at it again with your comments in mind. Maybe I should return it then.....

    Is the rug too traditional?

    Thanks all!!!!

I like the rug. I would put the front legs of the two sofas on the rug....maybe a couple of inches. I would bring the corner chair in (upholstered one) so it is just sitting on the rug....could put a floor lamp behind/beside it. Do you really need the wooden chair in the other corner? I would put it somewhere else and bring your plant out of the corner more. Now you could try the ottoman in front of the couch/loveseat or get a smallish coffee table....probably square. I would try the ottoman first. Oh yes, forgot...If you use the ottoman as a coffee table, I would upholster the chair in the same color as the ottoman....you can brighten up things with brighter pillows. One other thing.....would you want to try your rug the other way....just to see what it looks like. I don't know what is behind the green couch you have but with rug the other way, you could have a nice conversation grouping.

I'd like the rug turned 90 degrees, with the sofa front legs on the rug.

I think the rug should be pulled away from the fireplace and should be turned the other way and then have the front legs of both couches set on it. That way you'll have wood showing all around. I like the rug and the soft color it gives off. I wouldn't return it. I'd work with it. I also feel the mantel would look better with a larger slightly bolder piece that is not behind glass. That way you can feel the colors better.

I think the rug goes well with your other traditional furniture. I read somewhere that furniture should set about 6 inches onto the rug. I think you could get by with a little less than 6 inches.

Rug is sized too small for the room. The room will never look quite right with an undersized rug & the color is so muted, the cocktail ottoman will not really stand out on this rug.

No need to spend $$$. There are plenty of inexpensive rug options out there. Hard to tell the exact color of your loveseats, so here are a few options.

I really like #3 for your room.

Because the room is the same width as the fireplace it is creating sort of a bowling alley effect for me. I agree with others that the rug is too small. I like the rug, but the green on your chairs seems much bolder so I'd probably look for more vibrant coloring in the rug. I don't know that I'd necessarily go for tone on tone green.

Stylewise the fabric on your pillows isn't meshing with the Persian rug for me. I think the floral pattern looks really big & am I seeing a white background? I think the rug is looking more ivory and I'm not sure how that will work.

Really neat green color on your chairs!!

Personally for me when the sofa is placed over the rug then it gives a perfect finishing touch to the room. Moreover anything which is a little dynamic and vibrant will make the area more bright and energetic.

I agree with the poster that said the rug is creating a bowling alley effect. I would either go much bigger or much smaller to cover just the area between the sofas.
