Personally, I think your cabinets look just fine. I would think twice about painting them. Yes on the counter depth fridge. The backsplash is what looks dated to me. Not sure what "look" you are going after. For a more updated look, I would simply change out the hardware to black, bulky, long handles. Add a new contemporary backsplash, declutter countertop, leave the top without additional trim, and change your cabinet tops decor to a few larger more contemporary pieces...set them on pieces of wood so they do not "sink" into the top of the cabinets.

I agree with Barbara, but I also know from my own kitchen remodel that photos can be deceiving. My kitchen cabinets looked great in photos but in real life they were very faded & damaged & very ugly. Something about the cameras & auto correct? So if your cabinets are truly ugly, then paint them.

Yes to the counter depth. Why spend money on a built in when you're not doing a full remodel?
