Rug /room layout advice needed!!!

New rugs bc our large "2section" living room is soooo dark. Trying to lighten it up a bit. Is the matching runner too much matchy match? Would a round one next to fire place look better? Lots of kids in/out so worried about color.

Also any just general furniture layout or decorating advice? I'm all ears!!!

I know I need new pillows. Was thinking about some fun blue? Rugs are grey FYI.

Pull your sofa forward, the room is long and you need to cozy it up, maybe place the sofa table behind and put a vase and a couple family pictures on it. Try something shiny to reflect light.
Your big rug looks good, now pick out a couple smaller scale chairs in a pattern and place them across from the sofa tipped/ angled in. Leave space to get in and out of the room. Leave the
Floor lamp in the corner. Take your current chairs to the fireplace position them off the wall facing each other & place your ottoman between the chairs with a nice tray on it to double as a coffee table. Get a couple colourful throws one on the sofa and another on one of your chairs at the fireplace. The runner can go on the path from your front door towards the rest of your house. You have a beautiful home, I love what I see.

I have a bunch of throw rugs that are all the same because I absolutely LOVE how they look with my tile. If you like your runner, don't worry about it. I think it's fine.

If you come across another rug that you think will look good in front of the fireplace, go for it. You can always move the runner elsewhere in the house.

The dark furniture makes the room darker. You might see if you can find one or two lighter pieces to soften the room.

What is the second room with the fireplace used for? It looks like you have 2 rooms and are trying to use both as living rooms....is that correct? I would think you might want to use one as a large entrance as I see you have coats hanging in the fireplace room?

2nd room where fireplace is isn't used much. More of a "pass through" hallway to get to dining room and then onto kitchen. I feel like both rugs are a little too matchy match.

A friend suggested painting or staining tables lighter. Hmmmmm. If that's possible it might really lighten it up?

Yes, having both rugs the same is probably too much. To lighten area, change to lighter sofa, chairs or tables......yes..perhaps lighten or paint tables lighter tone.

The sofa pillows are taller than the table. I suppose I could prop up the table somehow? I love the idea.

I call these split living rooms 2-season rooms. In winter I'd group the seating at the fireplace end and make the opposite side a quiet reading or game area with a library/game table and chairs plus a comfy reading chair and small bookcase. In warm weather, the rooms can flip, with the entertaining and major seating taking the end with no fireplace. The main issues I see right now are the fact that all of your art is hung too high, there is inadequate lighting and little variety in color, and you need to tackle the coat issue. Easy to rehang the pix, so the "rule" that usually works best is 5-5-75. Art alone hangs with its center point 5' above the floor. art over furniture hangs with its bottom frame 5" above the furniture, art with furniture should stay within 75% of the furniture's width for balance. Art over fireplaces should stay within the footprint of the firebox and no part of any art should hang above door and window frame level.
