Burpee SuperSauce Tomato

I live in Anderson, Ca., the northern part of the state. It gets sizzling hot in the summers, but I've been fortunate to have great soil and irrigation. My tomatoes have done well each year and we can and preserve anything we don't devour fresh. Last year I ordered seed from Burpee for their SuperSauce tomato (absolutely couldn't resist the prospect of those huge sauce tomatoes) They were expensive seeds, and it hurt all over to purchase them. I was so disappointed when only a couple germinated from the whole packet!!! I notified Burpee and they refunded my money. However, the couple that did germinate went on to produce the most amazing sauce tomatoes! I was so impressed I actually decided to try them again this year. I'm happy to report 100% germination so far. All my little seedlings have poked their heads up. Can't wait for Spring.

I ordered some this year, but it is still too early to start them here.

How did you start them? Did you have bottom heat?

I built a shelf over my water heater to start seeds I get really good germination with that setup.

Mine are doing good, no ripe ones yet. I had a broken limb with one fruit on it so I went ahead and pulled it and it weighs 8.69 oz. I have some that are a lot bigger.

The plants are producing very well. I counted 27 on one plant and they are really big.

I will post some, if I can, I'm having a hard time posting pics. Somehow I lost the correct program for my camera and it downloads to a very unfriendly folder.

I have two super sauce plants in my garden, one that went in in early April under a WOW and has nice fruit set but no ripe ones yet. This is my third year with this variety and the first in which I will get any tomatoes -- last year, the seedling died, the year before the plant did not thrive. I'll post pix when/if they get ripe.

I don't grow tomatoes for just making sauce. I am not a big time canner. But at the peak of harvest I make some sauce with whatever is extra after fresh eating and cooking. What I do is to smash them lightly with a potato masher and get the juice out for drinking or to make soup with it and make sauce with the remaining meaty part. But for someone who wants to stock up on sauce for the off season BSS looks good. Looks like a big Roma.

My first ripe Supersauce. 17 ounces. I'm keeping track and weighing every tomato that comes in.

Sorry PupillaCharites, I Forgot to take and post pics! I have been very busy with work at my job and at home also.

But, I finally got enough to can some sauce in late July. I should have planted more and will next year if I don't kick the bucket before then. ;) I really liked the time savings of being able to skin and prepare the big tomatoes instead of so many small ones. Plus they cooked down to sauce very quickly, they didn't have nearly as much juice and seed like most sauce types.

I opened my first jar yesterday to make spaghetti. I love the flavor! They are a little sweeter than the paste tomatoes that I have grown in the past. The texture was much better also, not many seeds and it felt good on the tongue!

I saved some seed and will experiment with an F2 next year to see what I get.
