You mean mount the cubes on the wall? We've done something similar in other places in the house - I'm a huge fan. Perhaps once we paint and get locations of things finalized (we're working on the big boy bed and I don't want to have to move things. Thank you!

I would get bedding first and then choose the paint colour . For example

I would love to - at 4 though his tastes seem to change by day of the week so I wanted something neutral so I can switch it up and have found wall decals to make transitions better. I just found wall decal STRIPES so I could add some interest but not be nervous about painting straight or worried about someone's taste if we go to sell the house.

I would paint the wall a light grey then and get his favourite cartoon characters for example ,then later on move on with the more grownup themes ,here is an example of decals on a light grey wall, sorry but this morning there seem to be a bit of an issue with posting pictures on Houzz ,

I think you are on it - a nice neutral, maybe some stripes for a pop of interest, even if they are white and some fun super hero decals that can come down as he gets older. Do you have any other color ideas other than gray? I LOVE gray, but my downstairs bathroom, dining room and basement office are gray so I'm trying to branch out a little, haha.

Have you selected what kind of bedding you are going to use? If you are looking for something neutral Shaker Beige & Bleeker Beige are amongst the best selling Benjamin Moore colors. I also like Revere Pewter as a neutral color. Remember the paints look different in each room so make sure you try it out & look at it different times of the day before you decide. Good Luck.

I love the gray - always back to the gray it seems like. I think I might adds some stripes for accents. Maybe I can tie in blue. When I ask my son he picks out bright blue walls EVERY time.

I would paint the walls either a neutral creme color or a light gray. Then, I'd add a dark blue accent wall color to the wall that is adjacent to the bed. Change out all of the curtain treatments to a solid, dark blue to compliment the accent wall, but maybe use a gray or white curtain treatment for the windows on the accent wall so that it doesn't blend in. This approach allows a more neutral palette for you to add decals, accessories, etc without making the room look too busy. Hope this helps :) You have a lot of great space to play with!

Oh - I patched some holes from old shelves the previous owners left and it was their paint - they didn't leave it so I need to paint it something.

I like the Austin strips too but I think I could only do one wall, lol. Thank you!

Consider putting all the storage cube pieces on the wall where the bed is now and doing a built in bed in the small nook. If using the current curtains, get a solid spread in one of those colors and paint the walls in another of them. If you can paint the containers for the cube shelves, let him pick his favorite colors for that. If you paint all the furniture to match the cube storage the room will look more together.

So I can't paint the desk, but I could paint the shelves - but they don't LOVE paint - they are kind of with the idea that he needs something to store things but if something happens, oh well, you know? I can get some new fabric bins too though. I haven't picked out a bed at all and I'm painting all the trim in there white. First floor is 90% done, just working my way upstairs :). When we bought the house the previous owner's bed was in the nook but it sticks out a foot or two which I found to look silly. I would love to use the nook for something more interesting though. It is a really awkward size.

You probably need melamine paint for the shelves.

What is melamine paint? I painted previously some and sanded them to rough them up, then used a Valspar paint and primer (I want to say 3-4 coats) and then a glossy finisher.

When we switched to a big boy bed, we also lofted his bed. Best decision we ever made. He loves it, plus it freed up a bunch of floor space. Many even have integrated storage (we built his ourselves, for about $40, so it's just basic, lol). There are TONS of cute ones on Houzz

that is a fantastic idea! I keep kind of going back to ikea since they are the king of storage and organizational pieces but that's a really good point too. I also thought about a chalkboard wall in his nook but the magnet paint I put in our office was just SO awful to deal with I'm scared to.

What a cute idea Emmy has!! Why not paint the wall green behind his bed in the same shade as the foot of his bed and the green in the drawer beside his bed. The other walls could be either a blue grey or beige. As one reader says "If you are going to change his comforter to a big boy look" take a shade of the comforter and paint a lighter hue. Have fun with this. Forget the stripes and use the decals. He will grow out of the look when he becomes a teenager.

What do you think of that color if the space ship bed left the room? We are upgrading in the next year to a real sized bed.

Paint can change of course and as many of us have said "use a color that relates to a rug, bedspread, drapes etc. You just want the room to flow. Good luck! Do use Houzz to find examples.

I got it Lucy, but this is so much more of a pain than the previous way. We didn't have to go anywhere - everything was right there in the body of the dilemma most of the time.

Thank you everybody! I went to lowe's and picked out a dark blue and gray paint. I think I'll do the trim white first and start painting the walls. I'm still trying to figure out what to do to tie things together and make it pop a little bit.

P.S. Thank you for the link - I can't imagine the prices on them for kids things the way their taste changes all the time but definitely fantastic ideas. I wonder why it redirects you - I thought at first it was a virus.

Red will work as a nice pop with blue and gray as will a grassy green.

I think what I'll do is paint the basic colors and order the decals and kind of go from there - that may be enough to tie things together and may mean I just need to switch a few shelves. Cleaning out those stuffed animals will also be a huge help.

I think the reds in spiderman, the greens in the Hulk, etc. in the decals I found will actually tie in pretty well with a lot of the drawers, fingers crossed. Once I get things painted and decals up I may seek a little more help to get things right! That'll probably take the better part of a week.

I think it's a good idea to go basic. One of my favorite looks is this light cocoa on the wall with bright pops.

Definitely. Lets a lot of versatility in there too as they grow the more I think about it. Eventually I'll need a bigger rug in there as well but I'm not seeing them for the right price right now! For decals I found a Batman that is personalized with a name - which he'll love because he recognizes his name now, a giant spiderman, a giant Bumblee (yellow) transformer, and some smaller Avengers characters. Not sure what I'll do about the Toy Story decals that are up there - probably time to move on. I have to hang the wall art on his desk as well. Do I paint the trim white first or the walls? MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you look on the right bottom side of the nook there is this sloped piece of wood - do I paint that white? Its this awkward unfinished piece that has a few paint drippings.

Always paint the trim first and mask it when you paint the walls. I cannot see the sloped piece of wood. Does it look like trim? If so, paint it white. So glad to see that your are painting the trim white. That in itself will make all of your colors pop. You are doing such a good job. Have you clicked on Emmy's link to Tyler and Crispin Denault? What a great link to see wall colors and just ideas for a child's room. You know that you can look on the internet for rugs that are inexpensive. Also do you have a Home Goods anywhere near you?
