Forward to the past

I see our ability to preview and edit seems to have been lost in the acquisition. But so far I haven't noticed any compensating advantages. In my view, if a site can't do better than phpBB, then it shouldn't try to operate with software that is more limiting.

My Clippings seems to have become Bookmarks, but I don't see any way to reference them for other readers.

And it would seem that there is no way to introduce italics, and presumably also bolding.

They don't know about forums. The design is impossible. Why don't these companies ask people to make suggestions before? It's a form of crowd sourcing. At worst, they can eliminate what they don't already know.

Is this PHP BB Kaiseki? That's so 10 years ago.

This is not phpBB, and phpBB is not so 10 years ago, it is free forum software that is better than both this and the old Gardenweb.

I've always thought that the Gardenweb software could use some modernization, but not this. Yuck. Houzz has basically attempted to turn a blog commenting system into a forum. It doesn't work.

There's no more preview but edit, including an all-out delete of your post, is as fast as your mouse can click. Look in the top right corner of your message, the pencil and the x.

I like the preview option - look to the right of "latest activity" dropdown, and click on the middle option with two bars.

I read on another forum, one of the moderators saying formatting will be back soon, but not html coding. Forgot what it said.

So far I'm liking this. Not much lost, a few things gained. Just gotta get used to it rather than freak out.

I had to re-register just to view the topics, if that's really the case, then a lot of casual visitors will stop coming. They also wouldn't let me keep my user name..

Whaaat? Leave the country for a week and two giants merge (collide) and make a mess of things :( Could have been a good thing. Maybe they'll tweak it...should have tweaked it before rolling it out!

I'm not even sure how I'm posting or under what user name. I get conflicting messages that I'm "confirmed" but when I try to post, I'm not confirmed. Not sure what my user name will be. It's been monicakm for 13 years but they wanted to change it to monicakm_gw...but I could change that so I did, to monicakm1. None of those worked when I try to confirm! Good grief!

So I'm "monicakm_gw" now. I tried earlier to change it to monicakm but it said there was already a user by that name. I know! It's ME :o

phpBB or Kunena or any number of forum software handle these formats better. I think I prefer the Chowhound format --

html and embedding are definitely not allowed here...

I've tried to setup a forum like this on phpBB but couldn't get anyone to use it. I have always hated the forum software used by Garden Web, and this is a million times worse than that was.

If I had people that would transition over to another site I would put it back up in a heartbeat. I love the people hear, and I think Garden Web is a great resource, just the layout and forum software sucks.

For anyone who cares, an example of phpBB is the linux mint forum at http://forums.linuxmint.com/

A more elaborate construction, but perhaps closely held, is that used by dslreports.com a.k.a. broadbandreports.com
