How to transform Vintage Living Room into Casual Living Space

Hello. We are potentially buying a home with a formal living space (see photo). We are a young family with a 2 year old and baby on the way. I need the room to be a more functional casual space for play and perhaps TV. I'm having a hard time envisioning what it could be. Any ideas welcome. The front door enters right into this room.

The Craftsman Bungalow layout often has the front door entering right into a large living room with fireplace. The room I see in the pic does not look formal at all, and can be arranged spatially for a variety of uses including children playing....of course the fireplace will be off-limits. There is so much you can do with a 20ft living room like this!

Lots of possibilities for a young family in this room. Where is the front door?

Create two seating areas: one around the fireplace and the other (maybe two chairs) in from of the window near the kitchen door. Use area rugs to designated the two spaces.

I would suggest getting a or some Vintage Rugs - that will have an immediate affect :)

Thank you! The front door is near the bottom left of the above photo, and there is a large window on the wall opposite the fireplace. Attached is the picture of the front of the house to give you an idea of what you can't see from the inside photo. Would you carpet this room at all? What colors to paint? I love the casual Pottery Barn style. The house doesn't have a large family room, so this would be it. I want it to be warm and friendly for babies, crawlers and new walkers.

Congratulations, that is a wonderful room.

What about off white slipcovered sofas and a few big area rugs?

It would even work with the current wall color...

I would not carpet that lovely hardwood.

And hardwood and area rugs are cleaner for children who play on the floor.

Carpet is always dirtier than it looks.

Yes, a cozy area rug would work. Where would you place the sofas?

We were in the same boat at our old house. The formal living room was used as our family room. It worked very well for us! Enjoy your old Tudor revival!

I think you can thrive in a space like this. Especially if getting away from the formality seen in this setting. Decide where or how the TV will be placed. Hopefully you may have two focal points since you will have a fireplace. Set aside a good size area for play for your child as you know he/she will be in there with you. Maybe behind a sofa. Put down Flor carpet that is in squares which can be switched out if needed & can be spot cleaned easily when spills happen. Maybe use an area rug for the main adult area. Buy storage pieces from Ikea perhaps (they have great ones, for little cost.) Buy also some square ottoman pieces that can hold toys as well as be moved around for extra seating. You could even add a little colorful child's tent for the child to use as their own little hide away place. You'll be watching them all the time. On their side of the room add a chalkboard in a color that goes with your décor. In a room of this size you should not have so many problems coexisting with a child who has their own space too. Good luck & congratulations!!!

In doing this on your own without a professional I would first recommend you find photos that are examples of how you would love to see the room....a good way to start out. It gives you a springboard to move forward with in a step by step process using your existing furnishings.

As someone with two small kids, wood floors rock. Don't wall to wall carpet them. Not only is wall to wall carpet likely going to leave holes in your gorgeous wood...it will attract all the dirt the kids bring in. :)

We have wood. With my first, we used area rugs to define spaces. With my second, we ditched the area rugs and went to bare floor by 3 months. Slowed her down, too, as she was determined to be an early crawler. ;) this is a good thing to slow down, trust me.

It looks formal because there are formal furnishings in it. Search bungalow family room on here and see some great casual ideas.

Thanks so much for all of the ideas. I feel a lot better… The house is not ours yet - our offer was pending my ability to "see" the family space. Thanks to all of your ideas, I'm much closer to the vision!
