last modified: 11 years ago

ok this is not my idea, but being frustrated and not being able to find my want list (its rather long and i was dreading having to rethink and re type it up!) i just found this solution posted by susanC. off to try this now and figured this was worth its own post.theres still not a good solid place to put it, but for now i will be happy enough to just be able to have a copy.

big thanks SusanC !!!!!

SusanC In another thread, someone said that Tamara told them the trade lists will be back soon. However, it's always a good thing to have a backup copy of your list, and you can still create one.

Go to Google and search on "exchange page" "gardenweb" your user name.

In the search results, you will see the description of your exchange page, GardenWeb Exchange Page, and underneath that , the link to your old page, members.gardenweb.com/members/exch/your user name, with a downward pointing arrow next to it. Click on the arrow, and you will see the word 'Cached'. Click on Cached and you will be presented with a copy of your page as it appeared on Jan. 24 when Google last crawled your page and stored it in memory. (You'll have to scroll down to see it.) You can now cut and paste your page contents to a word document and save a backup of your list. Any hyperlinks you may have added to your page won't be in the copy, but all of your text will be. Google's memory cache gets refreshed each time it crawls a site, so it's a good idea to take advantage of this soon. "

I tried and it took me to the front houzz page not my list :( Also..... if you want to talk to and/or message someone you have to follow them. Click on their name and click follow..... good luck

it worked !!!!!!!!!! woo hoo !!!!!!

ok so cal gardener, not sure why you couldnt. do you get that you have to click on the arrow? its kinda hiding, not noticeable. but if you click on the arrow it pops up with " cached"

i typed into googles search box : exchange list "gardenweb" leilahamaya

and this brought up results for my list, it was the first listing. then click the arrow underneath it after the url, and it says "cached" and then click that, and it brought me to my old want and have list.

thanks for the tip though about following and messaging. doesnt seem to be such a great set up for trading with strangers...

You have to make sure you click on the arrow and bring up the cached box, then click on the cached box... The cache page will have a listing of all the stuff that was on GW, and under that will be your old exchange page list.

If you are getting the houzz page you are likely either clicking on one of the links instead of the arrow, or clicking on your exchange list link on the cache page instead of scrolling down to the text.

Socalgardengal, I brought up your exchange list for you- http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=cache:zWAAFSldg7cJ:http://members.gardenweb.com/members/exch/socalgardengal%2Bsocalgardengal+exchange+list&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&&ct=clnk

Make sure you copy your exchange list now socal... who knows when the next webcrawler will come by and wipe out that cache!

I think, and I might be mistaken on this... for messaging and emails you have to be a follower of the person you are trying to contact. And they might need to be following you as well.

    Thank you I did!

Ok here's some info I found about emails and messaging, straight from Tamara, on the hot pepper forum ......

"If you find another user that you would like to receive updates from, go to their profile page and click the follow button. Once you follow them, their site activity appears on your feed on your profile page. That user will be able to message you through the Houzz system, unless you have turned off the messaging.

You can message any other Houzz member that follows you by visiting their profile and clicking on the message button. If you don't see a message button for a profile that follows your own profile, that means that they disabled the messaging feature in their profile settings."

i just tried to message socalgardener. see if it worked.

anywho, just read a post that said the trade lists are saved and will be back, once they figure out how to link them up and incorporate them...so thats some good news. apparently even if you didnt save a copy, hopefully they will be put back up once they work that out. i am still happy to have a good backup copy.

btw, for anything else you might not have saved (whatever clippings or info) you could use this same trick...putting in whatever the name of it is, "gardenweb" in quotes and then pulling up the cached version.

all in all i actually like some of the changes, i am sure not the only one who thought GW could use some improvement as it was. however, i cant see how this can work out great if we cant easily email each other and dont have trade lists, but heres hoping they smooth out the rough spots and address those issues. the bright white and lack of formatting on posts isnt great, it seems real stark and hard to read...but the layout isnt bad.

i would like it better if we get more automatic options on the message box, i say if anyone is looking for input.

like on other forums i use theres more options when you make a post that allow you to make some thing bold, make a url link, and writes the HTML codes for your post to do that.....i had just figured out how to do stuff like that on GW, but now its different codes???? and it took me a while to figure out how to do that...change font size, etc

in the advanced settings, make sure to check allow others to message

ok, got your message socalgardener, and replied with a message about air layering my citrus trees, etc...did you get it? i like that now messages are findable, but when i went to sent messages, i couldnt find the last one. maybe i glitched out at the end of writing it, but i thought i sent it correctly.

time for a break from the computer box! i will be back in a few days and hope the dust has settled a bit =)

Thanks for the tip. It worked for me, and I put it into a google doc so potential traders could still see it. Meant to put a link in my signature, but we don't seem to have signatures here. In the mean time, I put the address into an idea book.

    Trade list

I rebuilt my trades list on the 7th of February so that effort is blown out of the water. :( Once the new owners bring it back I'll save a backup copy.

I appreciate the assist, but I did try the link earlier. As I said, I created my lists on Saturday this past week. I hadn't offered anything for trade in years and was interested in beginning again. :/ Ironically, I typed my list out in Word, and then didn't save the file on my hard drive. :) So, I'll wait for the restoration and amend my ways.

Bummer! But our trade lists should be up soon.

Emily, would the Search Form for trade list be available soon as well?

My list used to use html code for formatting and for links. Anyone know if we can use html or bbcode, etc? No worries if you don't, I'll try it anyhow, and post my results if someone hasn't already.

HI oldmobie - Unfortunately, you won't be able to use html coding on your trade list. But, while the plaintext formatting isn't as pretty, it gets the job done. :)

It does. Good to have the lists back, and a standardized way to access them. Bbcode didn't seem to work either. But it was easy enough to insert a note to see my ideabook for pics and links. The formatting's not a big deal.
