I wish I had good news for you but I suspect the bulbs rotted. Probably if you pull on the leaf tips the whole thing will come up since the bulb usually rots first and there will be nothing holding the leaves anymore....

Did the growing bulbs freeze? Is it possible you overwatered and the soil did not drain well enough? Don't tell your girlfriend what happened to the rest, just let her keep thinking you're a bulb pro and they all grew fine!

i have the same problem. Yellow tips and very few roots. the roots look yellow, not bulbous or white. plants are not robust at all. flowers look small and many of the flowers are whitish.....this is very depressing. Just changed the soil out in these planters last fall. could it be soil or is it the drainage? or the bulb itself?

Most likely problem is non draining soil has excluded all oxygen from the soil making it impossible for the roots to pickup water or nutrients. Fungus gnats are an indication of vegetative matter in the soil, but I do not believe the gnats are the reason for your problem. Al
