I can tell you it is not an OGR!! It still looks like Olympiad. It is young too. Let it get some age and some better growth.

No that is not an OGR. It's a hybrid tea and looks like my Veterans' Honor. However, there are probably hundreds of red HTs that it could be.

I'm convinced now that my ebay rose is the real Olympiad and my friend's rose is misidentified. I gave away my Olympiad to my coworker, yesterday. It was a very nice rose, but I only have room for one and my heart is set on the red rose that darkens as it ages and has a lovely scent. Thanks :)

Thank you, Dan. I received Firefighter last May, but it didn't make it through my zone 9b summer heat. I'm hoping Oklahoma I recently ordered from Heirloom Roses will do better. I will receive it in March, so it will have a little more time before entering our brutal summer. Oklahoma was mentioned by Jeri Jennings on another post. I would love to try Chrysler Imperial too, but would have to find a large pot, because I don't have any more space in the ground. I don't think I'm ready for pots quite yet. BTW, I've enjoyed your Youtube video. Thanks for sharing.

One thing you can do is to cover your canes with mulch as much as you can. Or use Wilt Pruf.

You need to help the plant hold in as much water as it can while it's putting down roots. You need to protect the canes from the winds. They will dry them out !

It gets windy here in the fall in Santa Clarita, then the heat comes. It's a lot for a young rose to go through. I looked up Wilt Pruf and found there is also a product called, Cloud cover. Thanks for the tips, Dan. :)

It's hard to ID red HTs for a few reasons: 1) they tend to be bred toward a standard, and so will tend to look rather similar when from a particular era; 2) red roses are notoriously difficult to capture accurately with digital cameras, especially on cell-phones; 3) one of the ways to help narrow it down is by fragrance, which can be less strong in new plants and is subject to personal interpretation.

I, too, have a thing for the fragrant dark-red and crimson HTs, and have a little pot-pet collection starting. The less vigorous ones are in 15" pots, while the others are in 22" resin barrels (from Home Depot, $20 each). Mine are all own-root, which is a plus when growing in pots since I don't want the extra vigor from rootstock. This is my current inventory, including from which nursery I purchased it. Unfortunately, Vintage Gardens is closed now, but if you search the names on HelpMeFind, you can see other nurseries carrying what I got from them. Roses Unlimited sells gallon-sized plants, while the others all came as band-sized plants. Also note that some are very old, and thus won't likely look like what you "expect" from HTs.

Thanks -- I've heard that about 'Uncle Joe' as well as a couple others on that list. For the most part, the un-bolded ones are beyond my immediate concern, either because they're virtually unobtainable or because (for whatever reason) I'm less drawn to them than the others. I kept them on the list, anyway, just for reference.

Only one of my reds is "slightly fragrant". In fact, I think I have only a handful of roses that are less than "strongly fragrant", but those are mostly the Chinas which I keep because they're basically ever-blooming throughout the growing season. Some of my most fragrant roses, in fact, are red -- but that's a result of my selection for fragrance when rose-shopping rather than red roses being inherently fragrant.

Wow, I wish I had room for all those roses. It would be fun to try them all. Still, I treasure the ones I have.

If your heart is set on your friend's rose take some cuttings and root them. It's the only way you'll be sure to get that rose.
