Need Design Help for Kid's Bed Nook

This is my son's bed nook, sorry for the mess, ha! (And ignore the hideous chair, it's getting donated.)

Any ideas on how to dress it up for my preschooler? It's a really fun feature but it's just sort of blah. He loves cars/trucks and working in the garage with his Dad. Originally we were going to use it as a play area and make it looks sort of like a mechanic's shop or garage. But, turns out he loves sleeping in it, so we are officially using as his bed. We need to add some steps/ladder and probably some sort of solid rail. I've even though of using one of those cube storage (Ikea?) bookshelves as the step.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has ideas for making the nook really pop. Maybe rustic shutters on each side?

I agree you don't need much. I might beef up the trim maybe paint it a color and consider painting the inside of the nook a bit more bold.

You could always get a curtain made that looks like a garage door which could be pulled across the nook. That would allow you to hide any "mess" in a hurry if unexpected visitors arrive and also allow him to use the space as a pretend garage playhouse.
