use countertop for backsplash also?

We have a new, cream kitchen without a backsplash. I had planned to just run the countertop up the wall but now I think the backsplash behind the range could stand to be a bit more interesting.

Ideas for something to add a little interest (but not busy)?

One person's busy is another person's boring!

Many on these forums are quite "afraid" of pattern and/or color, so they tend to steer people towards very safe and sometimes boring choices.

Have you gone to several local independent tile stores in your area? You want to go there for more unique choices, compared to big box national stores.

Browse through Houzz photos to look at kitchen backsplashes.

I think your chandelier should be lowered a bit and your art should be raised a bit.

I have a similar sized kitchen, but my sink wall is where your range is. I skipped upper cabinets, have a 10 ft wide x 5 ft tall triple window and did the tile mosaic from the counter all the way up to the 12 ft ceiling.

Many here would have said my tile was "too busy" for Taj Mahal quartzite, but it isn't when seen in the context of the white kitchen and design of the rest of the house.

What do you consider "interesting, but not busy"?

I had this tile below as a contender, but I think it would have been too much of one color for my kitchen.

the hood is a statement in itself, running the countertop up the wall will set it off and tie it all together, it doesn't need anything else.

Although, you already have a 4" curb backsplash, will you remove it?

Yes, removing the 4”. Debating if there is something fun to do with the 4”

IMO accent for the wall behind the range is a dated look but what material are you using for the backsplash? If quartz then IMO you will need something different behind the range in which case I would do a simple stainless backsplash there ,in fact I might just do the 4" except behind the range if that counter is quartz.

not stainless! so hard to keep clean! go with the countertop on wall of venthood and to bottom of upper cabinets.

Not quartz is my point so until we know the counter who knows. From what I see the only places needing backsplash are behind the range and the sink so not much needed

I have a stainless backsplash behind my range. Ain't hard to keep clean IF YOU CLEAN IT. Sheesh.

Your kitchen is lovely. Suggest adding tiles from end to end (vs just over stove) so that the effect won’t feel patchy.

You could add more interest in this area and keep the 4”trim.

@chispa in a lighter shade, that would count as interesting but not busy! You are right, I will go to a small store. The chandelier def needs to be lower and we will do that when we buy one. The art is centered at 5'4" (i.e. me!)

@Patricia Colwell Consulting the counter is silestone Et Calacatta Gold.

@Maureen I love those photos, i need to replace the recessed light witha pendant, that would be pretty. The builder recommended 3 windows, it would have been lovely! But, I like my upper cabinets there over the dishwasher, laziness won over prettiness. I will get some nicer matching pots and move the cactus elsewhere, the plants will help a lot.

Well you already have the 4” backsplash, so you’d want to remove that first if you add a backsplash to all of the counter areas. but yes, you should do something something just behind the range or youll be cleaning your painted wall constantly!
