Exterior update help needed.

I have no idea where to start on this update. My husband purchased this house before I was able to see it, and I am NOT a visionary, but even I can see that there is too much brown here. I have no idea if I paint the brick, paint the trim, paint the brick and trim, put a wash of some sort on the brick, stain the shakes, paint the porch. If I do any or all of the above mentioned ideas, what colors? Please help.

start by painting your trim a lighter color
