Please help dining and living room!

Hi, am new to houzz and trying to add browse around for some ideas for our dining and living. I have attached pictures here and feel a need for some painting in dining area. Could you please suggest something. The living area does not receive light and all the brown furniture is not helping. We are ready to buy new sofa and some colorful Ottoman/chairs or accessories. I love color. Painting the wall is not an option because it is an apartment. Could you please help with the dining area photo and furniture and change in any arrangements to enliven the space. Thanks a ton!

Wonder if the rug in front of the couch should switch directions. Have you tried it the other way at all?

Thanks Abbyjean. Should I move the painting to the photo wall in dining area or the vacant wall. I will try the rug suggestion and post pic.

I have it pictured....pun intended.....on the wall where the pics are now instead of those pics. I think it will bring in the chairs nicely there, too.

Ok :) will post the pics on weekend. What picture would you suggest be nice on sofa wall dimension color? I was also thinking gray sofa and white side tables but do you you think a gray sofa would be dark here. Or a beige sofa? The wall color is mostly flat beige. I want to bring in color but. Not sure how. Are side tables necessary? Here are some sofa we like and few side tables. What else can I change incorporate remove?

I like the art in the dining room, too. Can you lower it, though? Not sure how high it is. The middle of it should be eye level, and maybe it is close to that? I just seems high and it should be easy to see when seated at the table. If you choose to lower them, move them apart just a bit more, too.

Hmmmm.......I was thinking the rug was this long direction before and thought it should maybe go the other way. I was hoping it would not come straight out from the couch as I always feel like it looks like a runway then. So maybe it needs to go back the other way or post a pic of it both ways for me? Sorry, I know, lots of work I am asking you to do again.

Side tables are nice for lamps, like you have now, or else for a place to put drinks down. You might be able to put drinks on the ottoman, too, if there was a tray on it. Then a floor lamp might work beside the couch, too.

I love gray couches and you can get color with pillows and art.

Math for getting the art over the couch.....the art should be 2/3 the size of the couch, so it is a good size. Just keep that in mind. A canvas might be nice there since the windows are close and sometimes the sunlight can cause a glare on glass over a picture.

Hi there - I love the color you've brought to your rooms. The flower painting in the dining room still looks too small for that wall to me - either lower it (as others have suggested - it seems too close to the ceiling) or try moving it to the adjacent wall (that wall seems smaller and may be a better proportional fit.)

As for above your couch.. I would go for a large work of art (3' x 4', for example). This would be a great place to bring in some color. Or you could look for a sculptural piece that could hang on the wall, which would bring some dynamism and activity to the room. Either way, think about proportion and scale - you don't want it to be as big as the couch, but anything too small will look funny on the nice big wall. Try to find the happy medium!

My initial thoughts were to lower the picture over the sofa to just above the light switch and also to leave more space between the 3 pictures. For the dining room, I'd lower the chandelier and get a large bright canvas for the wall.
