Fear the Reaper

So I got a fresh pack of carolina reaper seeds in. I poured the seeds from the paper envelope into some warm water to pre-soak, stirred it a bit with one finger, then left it to soak. Few minutes later I went to the bathroom.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!

How in the name of all that is holy did I get that much of a burn on my hands just from giving the pre-soak seeds a quick stir? These things must be MONSTERS!

    LOL. Valentines Day surprise? ;-)

If you finally decide to take the Carolina Reaper challenge, just be sure you don't do it on an empty stomach. When I did it, I found the burn in my mouth was much easier to deal with than the gut burn that came afterwards.

    Happy growing!

If you'll going to try it.Just be careful and have some milk or ice cream on hand. Those babies are hot,but there are hotter peppers out there.

AFAIK Carolina Reaper is the world's hottest. At least officially that is.

Wow, awesome! I want to grow Carolina just to make a spray to keep the squirrels away from my peaches! I also grow the MOA Scotch Bonnet for sauces. Otherwise no other hot peppers, Only Hungarian paprika, Italian frying and New Mexico chili's for green or red sauce.

If you just want to keep squirrels away, its probably going to be a lot cheaper and easier to grow if you just get some habenaros. There's enough to get the job done, there's overkill, and there's nuke the site from orbit, its the only way to be sure.

Reapers as squirrel repellent fall under "You just made the star go supernova" on that scale. ;)

I like the "go big or go home" approach....sounds like something i would do.

Where I live the squirrels like to set up house under the hood of cars that aren't driven very often, and then tend to chew on the car's wiring harnesses. Sometimes they do serious damage, enough to where you have to file a homeowner's insurance claim to pay for it all. Then there is a good chance they will do it all over again!

We tried the cheyenne pepper trick to no avail, then several years ago I read in one of our automotive trade journals that Bounce dryer sheets contain the same chemical that landfills use to fend off rodents.

Since then we tie off a couple sheets in the offending area under the hood and have had no repeat "chewings". Not sure how it would work in an open area like peach trees subjected to weather, but might be worth a try.

Edymnion, Ed has some other seeds not available to the public.I got my hands on some peppers and seeds from a few people who are going to give the Reaper a run for the title. They are just making sure all is good with their crossed pepper.Just be careful when making a pepper spray, things can get nasty real fast.Safety first and watch out for changes in the wind.

Haha! Funny you say that about the dryer sheets, Dave. My cousin told me a about that trick a few years ago when I had a mouse infestation in the engine compartment of a pickup truck (not driven often) in my driveway. They chewed through a lot of the electrical wires. At first, I looked at him like he had three heads, but figured I had nothing to lose. I stuffed those things everywhere, and it worked like a charm. It didn't fix the wiring, but the mice were gone :)

Well Scorion, you may feel free to send some of those seeds my way and I'll see how hot they are. ;)

Thanks for the confirmation Mike. And of course squirrels are nothing but tree rats, no matter how cute (we also tell the customers to stop feeding them).

Well you learn something new every day! With the pepper spray you just have to get the squirrel to hit the bait when sprayed. They don't know it's sprayed, they think the fruit tastes like that, they won't be back! If you grow a lot of stuff, sell it, whatever, other means are needed.

Where I live in beautiful anytown USA suburbia You're not allowed to kill them.

There are quite a few peopers that are considered hotter than reapers. Supposedly it cost about 10,000 bucks though to go through the process of getting the title. For Ed, he has probably recouped that money through his marketing of "worlds hottest" products, shirts, etc. he has also stated that he has a pepper on deck that is around 3 mil scoville. He's just waiting until somebody takes the title then he'll release that one. It's scary when you know US grade mace is around the 3.5 mil scoville mark.

Oh I also like to lick my finger after I handle seeds lol. Gives you a good idea what you're dealing with

"I like to lick my finger after I handle seeds..."

I like to lick the mace off my lips in the holding cell after a night of drinking with the guys. Gives the cops a good idea of who THEY'RE dealing with... Haha!

One of the seed packets of bhuts I received in the swap had a piece of placenta attached to about 5 seeds. I removed the seeds and ate that piece of placenta. That was pretty warm for a good 5 minutes or so. Just a little taste of what's to come I suppose.

Edymnion you can also use medicated baby power, plant Fritillaria Imperialis bulbs in that are to protect it.They don't like Witch Hazel neither.Place a tree collars on the tree or some petroleum jelly. They hate sticky stuff on their paws.I have a few around here, that eat my ghost peppers like candy. They haven't touch the reapers yet. Those squirrels are nuts. When my plants start producing,I'll keep you in mind.

Maybe next year I will grow Reaper. This year , for the first time I am going beyond HABS. I have Trin. Scorp. , Scotch Bonnet, Fatali, (red / yellow) and bunch of other below HABS. My favorite is Lemon Drop w/ great flavor.
Ok. Lets keep the heat on !
