Reine des Violettes

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone who has been growing this rose can tell me anything about it.

1) How cane hardy it is?

2) How recurrent it is? From what I gather, it has one big spring flush and maybe a couple of flowers later on.

3) Is it shade tolerant?

Any other info would be much appreciated.

I can't help much as mine was a new bare root last year. It seemed to always have blooms on it the whole summer. Great spring flush and growth then it sort of stood still till fall when it exploded again. It was in about 6hrs/day of sun this year will be up to 9 with tree removal.

I don't have Reine des Violettes, though have grown Rose de Rescht for several years and would highly recommend this richly fragrant and healthy compact (crown hardy in cold zone 3) plant that flowers for most of the summer. I have this attractive looking plant nearby to the house and along the sidewalk where I can stick my nose into it as often as I can.

I wanted Reine des Violettes for the back of my garden. Against the fence where it can sprawl, if it is cane hardy it would be perfect. So Rose de Rescht will not be suitable, but thanks for the recommendation.

If I recall well, SCG, yours was sending a lot of canes by the end of the season.

Yes it was, good memory! It went gangbusters and I am worried I chose the wrong location for its size. I have been considering training it along my shop wall if it continues.

I also agree with Twrosz about rose de rescht. It has awesome growth habit and flowering. A must have IMHO.

That is if doesn't have any frostbite....

I would love to have Rose de Rescht but I'm out of space...

There is always room for such a nice compact rose. Like ice cream on a full stomach, fills in the gaps!
