The 30 inch Bertazzoni is also on my list of potential free-standing ranges. I, too, have read a lot of mixed reviews, but I'm still considering it based on the recommendation of a trusted appliance dealer I have worked with for years (during this update and a previous kitchen redo). I preferred few to no electronic components, good BTW but not 20+K, and willing to accept smaller oven as I don't bake. Another contender is the Big Chill Pro Line http://bigchill.com/shop/cook/big-chill-pro-stove/ but the Berta fits my budget better and I think service will be easier through my dealer.

My appliance rep said they sell quite a few Bertas and have had very few complaints or returns. And she has been very candid in her opinions about some of my other ideas :) so I don't think she is over-rating the Berta for her own agenda.

I wonder if your question would generate more comment if x-posted on the Kitchens forum.

Are you considering open burner style ranges? I just bought a 30" Bluestar RCS range (slightly more than your budget but not by much) and I am extremely happy with it's performance. I looked at Wolf, Viking, Bertazzoni, Thermador but when I saw the Bluestar line I was completely sold on the open burner design. I am a serious cook and this fits the bill. Clean up is easy as everything on top comes apart (with a catch tray underneath the stovetop) and the convection oven does a good job for my needs.

I am not familiar with open vs closed burners (new to this), but when I looked @ Bluestar, they appeared to be out of my budget. Also, wasn't familiar with Big Chill until right now - does anyone have any experience with them? Would love to hear more about their pro line.

The RNB 30" (bigger burners) goes for about $4500. the RCS I bought is $3299.
