Help Me Choose A Wall Oven

I have a Gaggenau 24" inch convection oven over a Thermador 27" convection oven. After 28 years of wonderful service my Gaggenau has died and my Thermador is working only sporadically, throwing out fault codes and beeping as many other Thermador owners have reported. I prepare many gourmet meals for charity fund raisers and I do a lot of baking, so I need accurate and reliable ovens. Discouraged by all of the negative reviews on the web about 27" electric wall ovens, I toyed with the idea of replacing my 27" cabinet with a 30" to accommodate a 24" Miele or Gaggenau combi steam oven over a single 30" Miele or Gaggenau convection oven. Both companies have discontinued their 27" models. Incredulously, I have been quoted estimates in the $20,000.00 range to do that simple swap out, including the cost of the ovens! So, I am back to trying to find a reliable 27" convection wall oven from the handful of companies who still make them. Obviously, Thermador is out because I have seen nothing on line to suggest that they have corrected any of the issues experienced by me and many other reviewers. One electrically savvy Thermador owner repaired his oven by replacing the cheap capacitors that the manufacturer installed . Apparently, the factory installed capacitors are failing because they are not made for high heat environments! Wolf ovens are out of consideration because of the enamel chipping problem that has been frequently reported on this and other blog sites. Whirlpool's "Gold" was reviewed highly by Consumer Reports but multiple reviewers complain about being annoyed by the loudness of its cooling fan. Thus, I am hoping to hear from avid cooks who have had experience with either Bosch, Electrolux, Kitchenaid or Frigidaire convection wall ovens. Please help me decide which 27" convection wall oven to choose.

You cannot go from a Gaggenau to a Whirlpool and not be sorely disappointed. People around here say nice things about Electrolux.

You might be happiest if you just plunked down the money for the new cabinet (27" is generally being phased out), and get a Gaggenau double oven if you don't wan to pop for the combi-steam.

Thank you for your reply. I know in my heart that you are right about switching from the Gaggenau, but I cannot work with just a 24" oven because I cook a 24-26 pound turkey at Thanksgiving and I have standard sized baking sheets, neither of which will fit in the 24" Gaggenau oven. It is just difficult to justify such a large expenditure for a 30" double oven cabinet and two ovens!

My A#1 priority for my kitchen were Gaggenau ovens. My mother has one, and having cooked with it, I would have no other. From a friend's description, I'm sure I'd be fine with Wolf if it didn't have the interior chipping problem. I know full well what a hurdle the cost is. If it's beyond your reach it just is. But saddling yourself with a low end oven is not the way to go. At that point, buy a Breville smart oven and put it on the counter. :) People actually like those.

One thing to try, if you're willing to pay for the carpentry part, is scouring the places where stores off load the previous models. It's been just long enough since the Gaggenau model change that the ones you're likely to find would be from situations like the homeowner bought it, lost his shirt, sold the house short and unfinished, and never paid for the oven. So the store has it but needs to get rid of it. Try eBay, and any of the other sites where they let go of things. Also talk to your local appliance dealer. Do check with Gaggenau first, but when people here have bought ovens under similar circumstances, they've received full warranties.

I haven't personally used one, but Electrolux seems to be generally well liked, and they have a 27", I think. Some people are very happy with Bosch, but others hate it just as much. KitchenAid seems to aggregate as better than meh, but because of a lot of okays, with a few not so okays, rather than than a wider swing. These are my own general impressions of what people have been saying, however, and you should read their reviews for yourself, and, if possible, make an appointment at a showroom--or two--where they have your possibles wired up, so you can test drive them.

And remember, a double oven is going to cost an appreciable amount less than two singles, and certainly a lot less than a single and a combi-steam.

Of course, I should mention, I once made one and a half turkeys in my Gaggenau combi-steam by doing them in quarters. Where there's a will...

You don't happen to be in Michigan, do you? if so, do you happen to have white cabinets? I have an extra 30" single wall oven cab.

Thanks Debbi, Unfortunately I have oak Rutt cabinets which is why I was quoted such a high price to replace my ovens. Rutt still carries my cabinets and they can match the finish but they have gone up a lot in price in thirty years!

Pillog you are right. I just have to remember that my previous Gaggenau lasted 27 years and baked more accurately than the GE and Thermador ovens that I had to replace after only a few years of use. Considering that, Gaggenaus are a worth the expense.

Many years ago I was able to hire a local cabinetmaker to remake an existing double oven cabinet to hold a larger oven. If I remember right, he left the cabinet doors above as they were and made new filler strips for the sides of the face frame. The cost was very reasonable. The current Gaggenau 30'' oven requires an opening 28 1/2'' wide I believe.

I'm a "from scratch" cook/baker and have never had a problem with my 27" Bosch convection wall oven after three years. The fan is quiet, and the oven is easy to wipe down. I suggest you take a look at that brand as well. Good luck with your search and please let us know how this ends.

see if you can find a dealer with the old style Miele ovens, they just changed to a new style a few months ago. I found a 30" convection and a 24" combi steam for 30% off. Haven't installed them yet.

Sorry to hijack--I have the whirlpool oven. Ugh. I hate it!! The fan is really loud and it runs forever. There's a repair kit? I've tried googling it--but don't see a recall or anything. I would love to fix it. Pamela233, help?

    Hi Edwina 1330

The loud noise from the fan is an easy fix. It has to do with a damaged screw hitting the fan blade. This is definitely covered under the warranty. Chances are it might have happened in the factory. I know there is more info on GW about this repair. I was on another post in the fall regarding it but I can't find the post. I will look to see if I have more info in my notes.

I've had the Electrolux since July and love it so far, although we are only in that house a couple of weekends a month right now, I do usually bake something. I really like the interface and can even use it without my reading glasses. Love the gliding racks, the temp seems really steady, the adjacent cabs don't get warm. I have never used the self-cleaning feature, though, don't know if I will!
