Cherokee Purple – This was my first black many years ago when I discovered life beyond hybrids. It did just okay the first year, but it seems like every subsequent year, its done better and better. Usually quite productive and always way ahead of the 80 DTM. I have been saving seeds each year. Maybe it’s adapting.

Indian Stripe – Always does well. Not as productive or early as Cherokee Purple for me, but tomatoes are noticeably larger.

Black From Tula – Had been one of my favorites, but has been rather middle of the pack the past couple of years. When it’s good, it’s very good. Seems like it reverted to just average after buying a new pack of seeds.

Black Krim – Have never had a particularly good year with this variety, but it seems like I keep trying as I know others have had success with it.

Black Cherry – Looks like a cherry to me. I like it a lot but wish it were more productive. That just might be an unreasonable perception based on Sungold expectations.

JD’s Special C-Tex – This one never really worked out for me, so I retired it.

Gary’O Sena – Haven’t grown it too many times, but it was exceptionally impressive last year. Supposedly, it’s a cross between Brandywine and Cherokee Purple, so I guess it’s a borderline black, but it looked black to me.

Hope to try someday: Cherokee Chocolate, Paul Robeson, and Carbon. Might have to add Japanese Black Trifele to that list.

Remy (SSS) calls Arbuznyi "mahogany"; Tatiana says this: "beautiful mahogany skin color with dark green shoulders and faint thin dark green stripes, striking dark pink/purple/mahogany flesh." I'm growing it for the first time this season (after having tried it last year, with seeds from a now-defunct outfit, not of which germinated). I have to say I'm looking forward to it.

Black and Brown Boar is a really yummy and very productive salad size tomato. I'm also growing, for the first time this year Sarah Black, Indian Stripe and Purple Bumblebee.

I tried Large Barred Boar for the first time last year and was blown away! It was by far the best black tomato I've ever grown with good production and excellent flavor-better than Cherokee Purple, which I almost always grow. My Cherokee Purples were also good last year. I tried Indian Stripe and like someone above noted, they were quite a bit bigger (one was easily 2 lbs). They were tasty but not quite as good as Cherokee Purple. I've also grown Black Krim, Black Prince, and Japanese Black Trifele (that one is VERY productive). I recall all were good but not as good as the aforementioned ones. I think I may try Cherokee Chocolate this year.

There seems to be many choice but limited garden space and time to try them all. But not bad, I have 5 to grow this year. I liked CP and JBT a lot. The other ones yet to be tested and tasted.

BTW: I am also going to grow Ananas Noire ( Black Pineapple). But it is really a bi/multi-color .here is a picture of 2014.

I love the semi-rainbow look of AN. And sure it taste just right, perfect balance of sweetness and acidit, and very juicy. That was the only tomato variety that I sliced and ate plain.

I just sent for seeds for Bear Creek which is supposed to be amazing. Indian stripe, black from tula and CP will be in the mix as well

I like black cherry and cherokee purple best. I didn't have much luck with japanese black trifele. It produced only one tomato. It was the only failure in the garden last year out of 13 varieties.
