That's definitely a Salvia microphylla. The flower color (pure red) and the aspect ratio of the width vs the length of the foliage plus its shape limit the possibilities. The ones I am thinking of right now are not in wide distribution: Zaragoza and the deltoid-leaved El Rodeo. To the midstem leaves have a different shape, and is it hardy where you live? Is this growing in a greenhouse or under grow lights?

Thank you for your reply! I don't recall purchasing any salvia with those names though mislabeling is possible. It's a cutting growing under indoor lights right now. I purchased the plant last season so I don't know how hardy it is yet.

hot lips is a microphylla. It could be that...often the red and white blooms don't happen until later in summer. My hot lips is all red and all white flowers until june, then all red until Sept.
