ooma telephone service

I am considering dropping my landline for which I pay 30.00 a month now and getting Ooma for which I would pay less then 4.00 a month in my area. I have read everything I can about it....sounds too good to be true.. Anyone use this service, would love to hear any reviews on it from you. TIA

I use ooma, one complaint is there is about a 0.5 second sound delay which I am not a huge fan of, but I don't talk much on the phone so it's still worth it to me for the savings. I also don't have fiber optic Internet, so my slower Internet nay be the problem.

robo, is your connection hardwired or wifi?

I use Ooma as well. The delay is annoying particularly while calling someone else using Ooma. Agree with Robo though, the savings are worth it. Hard wired.

It is like all internet telephone services as I understand, some days good, some not so good. The only "quirk" that I seem to have is that sometimes on an incoming call, when you answer, the Tello reboots immediately and the only way you know who to call back is call display. I have the premium service. Tello is hardwired @ 5Mbps up & 6Kb up. Still worth changing despite the occasional aggravation.

Mine is hardwired as well. I have a two-handset cordless phone plugged right into my modem.

Been using it for several years now with no complaints. Sure, it's not perfect but at the free price you can't find anything that beats this deal.

I have Ooma also - 3 years maybe a little longer. As for the delay, I sold our phones before we moved and bought new ones here and voila - no more delay. Could be a total coincidence but seems unlikely. I find the cell to cell delay that I get to be far more annoying - I am forever tripping over the other person's words on a cell call.

Thanks everyone, sounds like I should try it out.

I got an ooma last Friday (from Amazon) and I was excited to try it. So far it is not working. The first tier of customer service is very scripted and all of their suggestions we had already tried. They promised us a call back in 24-48 hours but didn't return the call. My DH was going to call them back this afternoon. I haven't talked to him since but the Ooma is still blinking red and not working. If I have a defective unit I'd like to return it and try again, if it is another problem I'd like to solve it but so far getting escalated to a higher level of support is problematic. I really want this to work so I hope customer support is responsive. It is frustrating!

Yeh, the first line customer service could use some improvement. I don't know if there is a separate customer service for Canada where I am but if they are the same, ask to speak to Rowena. Head teck for here anyway. Knows her stuff and should be able to help. She is a pretty busy lady, so it might take a while for her to respond.

I have a stupid question, I am not very techie so here goes. I have wifi in my house for the computer. I dont want to get the wifi version of ooma because I am reading there are many issues with that, but not so much with the hardwired version. Can I hard wire my ooma to my cable wifi box?

You'll connect the Ooma to your router which is what is sending the wireless signal to your computer. Not a stupid question - we're all learning. We had to call for support setting up a fax for my DH's business and the first line support was great. Probably depends on who answers the phone, the day and the issue.

So the router is actually what I refer to as the cable box which has the green flashing lights?

The phone then has to be in the same room as the ooma? Might not work for me as the router is in the utility room downstairs but I wanted the phone upstairs in the office.

My Ooma is still not working but they have decided to send me a new unit to try. Fingers crossed!

I would not recommend connecting Ooma router to any wireless source. Not saying it cannot be done but it be better to connect it wired back to the modem.

Yay! I recieved a new unit. My ooma is working!

    did you hardwire yours

Mine is connected to the router

Mine is hardwired to the modem. Routing is : modem to Ooma Tello to router to home network. This is how Ooma recommends you do the connections. This allows Ooma to prioritize your bandwidth usage. The only problem with this setup is that when Ooma craps out and reboots, so does your internet, although it is not for long- maybe 5 minutes or so.

Had no problem with ooma for last year over a DSL line. It certainly saved money!

Ooma may have changed the recommended setup but they do offer a number of options Ooma setup

The part that confuses me is the 'ROUTER', would this be my cable box or something else?

I'm sorry to post something so random, but everytime I see OOMA, this song starts playing in my head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgpInZ6OQ40

The router is usually integrated with the 4 standard Ethernet port connected to the modem that was supplied by your cable company. However the router is something most people buy themselves then attach to modem. Today, many of these modern cable modem boxes incorporate the router and ethernet port all in one so you don't need anything else. Hope this helps.
