Such a great space! Its really going to depend upon the style of interior your going to implement... Judging by the structure of your interior I would go with stained railing, same stain that is applied on your wood floors. Good Luck!

Thanks :-) I'll be buying new furniture too. I guess I'll be going for a modern, casual, classic, rustic look. I guess not really sticking to just one style, if that makes any sense. Overall, I want to achieve a light/fresh atmosphere. So you think staining it like the floors? (my stair guy will be happy, painting is more work than staining) l was thinking that too as I like the contrast, until I recently saw pics of white of railings and fell in love with it. Just not sure if that would work for my home though. Now I'm on the fence.

I think with all your dark accents, dark spindles would look really great. But it depends on whether you want to bring them forward as part of the decor or just downplay them as part of the background house (in which case white)...

Agreed. Do you want to draw your eye over to the staircase? In a grand curved hand carved staircase maybe so. In something more simple like yours maybe not? However, if you just can't decide, ask your flooring guy to stain 2 or 3 spindles after the floors are done. Look at it then. If you aren't keen on it, you can simply use Kilz and paint them out. No harm done.

I would stain the rails and posts to match your floor. I would paint the spindles white.

Bear in mind that different woods take stains differently.

The same stain on different wood may not "match".

@mzloolue, your absolutely right, my floors are maple and my stairs are oak. My floor guy just showed me a sample of the stained wood and it's a bit off, but still close.

Looks like majority says dark rails, white pickets (committed to white pickets cause they came preprinted). I may just go ahead with that. Besides, I can always paint the railings white after, but not vise versa...I think my husband has had it with my indecisiveness :-/

Have you considered some simple metal in the rails? I think a touch of black metal would look great. No scrolls... just straight :)

I think it will look fabulous when it is complete. The nice thing about Houzz is that you can obsess about these things without driving the people in your life crazy. My husband only saw a portion of my obsession when we were dealing with these types of issues.

Ok. So I'm up late having a bit of a panic attack. My stair guys just finished staining the nosing and rails. The color is a pretty close match, just a bit off as expected. My major dilemma is not so much the color but the wood. My floors is distrssed maple with A LOT of character and knots (we have a dog). So I figured oak grain will go better than smoother maple treads. By seeing the stained nosing, the grains in the oak are very apparent. The stairs are still in progress, none of the treads or risers installed, so I don't have the whole picture.

Did I seriously mess up? Should I have picked maple treads? I'm really worried. Anyone have experience with oak staircase and maple floors?

So long as the stain colors of the oak and maple are close, it should be fine. Your floor has a lot of character as you say so the grain of the oak shouldn't be that apparent compared to it. Try not to worry about it. This is what gives a home the warm and charm that makes a house a home.

It's very pretty, and from what I can tell from that picture and the others you've posted, the color match looks very good. The grain in the oak will resemble the knots in the maple from a distance, and it shouldn't be an issue.

In the future I would go black metal or use something in the room to accent with if your going to do metal. If you have the budget I would do a metal modern railing with a wood top that will match your floors. Either option works great!
