Hi everybody

I bought 2 Giraffes and I was so happy in advance... Fatal error !

The first one, I have no idea :

The 2nd one, I think, might be Rio Negro, but I need your expertise.

I like them anyway, but as many of you, I like to be sure !

Thanks a lot for any suggestion.

I concour with Donna on the identities, and these hybrids are both lovely! As to mislabels, I purchased from a Do-It-Yourself WareHouse a decent, bigger bulb of "Stardust" (which might be identical with "Revelation") but I rather bloomed, as far as I can tell from the few pictures provided on line, "MAESTRO" with three scapes which is AWESOME. It looks like an embodiment of Charisma, Showmaster, Tosca, Daphne, alltogether

Thank you all ! I bought them on a Dutch site (theFlowerBulb). They had a goog choice but I don't remember seing a Machala. Maybe they had one left that waited for me...

Haweha, your Mystery is gorgeous. I saw some topics about your creations and I'm wondering what you plan to do with this one ! I'm a future customer when you decide to sell some of your babies :)

Thank you for your interest! Now try to crossbreed "Machala" and "Rio Negro" just in order to see whether it works.
As to my "Mystery" - I think that I am correct with "Maestro" since I found a confirming short Video from one High Master of the Art (of Hippeastrum breeding) himself, namely MARKO PENNING (from PenningFreesia). Enjoy:

oh yes, it matches, to my newbie eye.

Speaking about crossing, is there a thread with advices and explanations about the basic rules ? When you say you're going to try crossbreeding Machala and Rio Negro, why could it fail ? Is it the tetraploid or not thing, and where can I learn about that ? (beware, I'm curious and I have loads of questions !!!)

These both are (more than likely) DIPloids (I conclude that from their appearance, which means this is not a scientific judgement). If so, then the Ploidities are matching, yet there is one considerable impediment with DIPs: These are QUITE often sterile (and VERY often self-sterile), and/or just "capricious" as to production of seeds upon pollination from another DIP: So, on one occasion they will take, on another not. Just try it...

When you say "from their appearance", that means there are some clues to recognize them ? Are cybisters diploids ? or papilio ? I read somewhere Rio Negro is a Papilio cross. I have no idea for Machala. Anyway, my first attempts will be a surprise, as I mixed up the labels. Only the "mothers" are sure. So I have one year to read and learn !
Thank you very much for your answers and precious advices !

Things are actually more complicated. I read that H.cybister be a PENTAploid. Anyways, H.cybister ("Chico") crossbreds very easy with: H.papilio, "Giraffe", and "Pink Floyd" which all "should" be DIPloids. I consider all Hippeastrums with a lot of green in their bloom, AND/OR conspicuously narrow segments, for "DIP".

Dear Haweha, thank you very much for infos. That's precious because I didn't find many on the web. Maybe I didn't look in the right place. I will try again. Thanks again
