i am in the process of having custom drapes made for my master bedroom. I was thinking of treating myself to custom bedding. When i got the estimate from ethan allen for a tab bit over $5k for a king size, like you , I had to re-evaluate my once in a lifetime treat. I am going to opt for bedding off the shelf.

After spending that kind of money, you may feel obliged to use for years to come. I would rather have the option of changing my bedding when I tire of it. There are so many lovely bedding options out there vs having done custom. If you don't feel comfortable on how to pull the whole look together, if you head to a good shop they can recommend how to pull things together.

I like to change my bedding on a whim. $5000 would buy more lovely duvet covers and shams than I could use in a lifetime. I'll take mine off the shelf, too.

I change my bedding at least twice each year just for winter and summer and I also like to change it up after a couple of years I guess I would go broke buying custom so off the shelf or better yet online there is some awesome bedding companies online.

I've gone the route of purchasing plenty of duvets (cold weather, hot weather and in-between options) and enjoy purchasing covers, pillow cases and sheets as the need suites me.

I know plenty of people in Europe who spend PLENTY of money on high-quality duvet covers (2 of everything) and then never purchase another product for 20 years. Even after 20 years of use, they look GREAT! But everything is "classic" white or slight variation thereof. Nothing "trendy", just beautiful.

It probably works out in the wash (haha) but it would certainly hurt to drop $5K in one sitting.

I had my bedding custom made cause I have not been able to find off the shelf to fit my bed. We have a pillow top california. King but it is taller than a normal bed so the bedding is too short on the sides

Custom bedding, like custom drapes, do not complain to store bought. What I often do for my clients is mix up custom pieces with store bought. Typically I do a store bought duvet cover and a store bought summer spread. I go custom on bedskirts , shams and accent pillows. I always make sure they have a slip in back or zippers so the pillows can be dry cleaned or washed, but seeing that these are not the bed pillows, they hold up very well.

Great question! No need for custom-- just a great light and lofty down comforter ( that will last for ever) and a washable light weight, silk like, easy care, duvet cover-- all over just a fitted sheet! Great to sleep in and easy to make in mornign! You can alway change the duvet cover for variety...
