It is difficult to point you in one direction or another without being involved in the design of your kitchen. Most lines are "semi-custom" now, and offer some modification capabilities, and often the choice to do a custom stain or paint color. Another way to save money is by looking for a full-line cabinetry that offers cabinet boxes out of MDF rather than plywood. You will have to make decisions based on the design and whether you can achieve it within a particular cabinet line, as well as what construction elements are important to you.
