The 'wild' blue amaryllis

Been watching with great interest some online auctions from an Idaho bulb company which has been offering these things. I got some bulbs for fun back in December-January. You get ten bulbs for however much …

I've gotten like 30 of these nice little bulbs - they about the size of a year-old amaryllis you grow from seed - and planted them in the solo cups to sell at the FM as a fundraiser for the local MGs.

Anyway, lately some real "wild 'wild amaryllis fans'" appear to have sprouted up with the auction premiums in the $60 range for ten bulbs. SIXTY … that's six bucks a bulb, or about about a buck quarter per cm for these 4-6 cm bulbs.

WHAT are these people thinking?

They are hardy in z4-8, and must be at least that, because they come from cold Idaho. Plant about 4" deep and grow 15-18" tall. Need summer dormancy.

Oh, they grow only on cliffs in the Rockies … and some little gremlin plucks the seeds to sell on the internet from rio … (^-^) … if you catch my tongue-firmly-implanted-in-cheek drift...

? Bragu, what point are you trying to make? Supply and demand my pal.

You know that the colors range from pale, nearly white, to intense blue. What color are yours?

The point, I think, is that I wonder if there are some folks so enamored by the Worsleya that they may believe they are getting something similar, since the word 'wild' is attached to an elusive blue amaryllis. They see the price of a true 'W' and don't blink when they see they can get wild ones. Supply and demand, yes. That is perhaps why Idaho only offers two batches of bulbs weekly. Shrewd.

Just an observation, and …

Am probably WAY off base on this …

I've seen the ads,but wouldn't believe them,since i've never heard of them, through growers, or sellers.What exactly HAVE you bought,Dave.I can't determine anything from your post, except that you are donating something you don't approve of.

as a blue flower bulb you can put in your garden for a buck, thereby donating to the MG (master gardeners). I also got some tulip bulbs from them. Never had a problem with their stuff.
