I just thought you were trying to get away from everything matching, leestep. I think a matching love seat will not help matters....if anything find some smaller chairs that do not match your sofa and sell the other 2 that seem to be giving you a hard time.

Groveraxel, can you switch out my rust colored sheers for a gold color so I can get a visual? I can tone down the Orange by removing the sheers and going with a lighter color.

leestep.........I have read each entry. Why not put the furniture back to the original placement with a few minor changes? Was very pleasing to the eye! And had a good traffic flow.

First, put sofa and 2 matching round tables and matching lamps together again. Keep the chairs where they are---placed in original pics.

Then, pull chair a bit out of the corner and 'position' until it feels right. Add a square or rectangle table and lamp (not a glass lamp)---one not matching but one with character. The same for the other chair by the windows, but no matching table or lamp. Move the chair a tich from the wall--don't let it hug the plaster!

It was a good arrangement but the room lacked the character achieved through accessories. I personally think the rug is too small to pull all pieces together and the coffee table should be moved closer to the sofa. Keep the drapes, keep the pillows. Start working on the accessories, the character.

You're so close! I would suggest the following...
Take the curtain rods up 6" or so, so the windows appear taller. Also, I'd use a cream linen on the windows to lighten and brighten the space.
I'd also use more light colored pillows to tie in the rug and maybe just one small rust colored one. I think making it monochromatic will give it a more cohesive feel. Lastly, you could put a console table on the wall where the chair was and dress it up w lamp and coffee table book/ candle. You could add art work above it too.


By the way...I like the chairs facing the sofa- don't be afraid to put them close together. Best of luck!

Janerama, thanks for taking the time to view the thread. Repositioning the other chair until it works is an option as well. I'll be rotating things around tomorrow to see if any of the other suggested looks work. I agree, the room is eye catching when looking at it on the thread. Your also correct, accessories is what I need, but have been a little lost on how to pull it all together. I can definitely get another rug, but unsure of what kind. I've been a little skeptical about a pattern one, due to the wall art being so busy. I only went with the cream shag, because it brightened up the room. With suggestions I'll continue to tweak until it's right.

Love nrs's suggestions to lighten up your space by adding more creams-the ivory and creams will tie in the shag rug. Right now, nothing ties the rug in with the rest of the colors in the room.

Ok folks, hubby and I have been moving the furniture around and think we found a good placement. I took several photos per everyone's request. The last set of photos I think should be the look and it works. I had the chair in the corner in the wrong place. I also took hubby's ottoman from the man cave for a better visual of a square table. A lot of comments. Hopefully I can add a new one. Add a throw on the couch. See if you can find one with multiple colors with just a little bit of orange in it and other colors for you to go off of. Or just a completely different color for the throw. Add family pictures, vases with flowers in them, a little decorative mirror, and if you like, maybe a tea set on the coffee table. If you don't feel the tea set, put some candles on the table. I love your living room. it is very beautiful. The flooring is lovely as well as your area rug!

Sorry......but want to offer one more thought.......can the chair on the back wall possibly go in front of the big white vent, angled just a titch toward the other chair and then the table and lamp go on the outside of it? Maybe the tall plant could be back in that open corner then??? That would pull the chair in to the grouping a bit more and the vent would be covered....unless it needs to be open. Not sure.

leestep, if you are unable to make the changes that many have suggested, I would go back to your original arrangement. It looked the best. If you are keeping the white shag, you need some ivory in the pillows to bring that color to the couch. These pillows help lighten the space up. Yes, a lamp would be nice it the corner instead of the plant. One plant in the room is enough.

Pull the drapes somewhat over the windows so you can see more or the rust. They are the correct color for your room. I liked that tall floor lamp you showed us. Bring the coffee table closer to the sofa. You just needed one more lamp. Place the floor lamp to the left of the sofa. I like the chairs in the corner to the left of the dining room opening with the end table & the other table lamp between, except pull the chairs closer so the arms are actually touching. Inches do make such a big difference. No, you do not need a larger area rug, although that is an option for more movement & texture in the room. Get over having to have everything centered. The chairs do not have to be squared to the wall.

Abbyjean, because the wall with the vent on it sticks out, the chair is too big to fit there at the angel you suggested. For the most part, I think the small adjustments have come along way. Since I'm still on the fence about the plant near the couch, I'm going to buy a floor lamp to see how it would look. Now my question is, when looking for a flower lamp, would this one be ok? Or s tick to one of metal? Also, is the tv ok now? Or should I get a big one that would move in closer to the other chair?

Groveraxel, thanks for chiming in. Being that the room barely gets used the chairs being reachable isn't a huge concern. The room doesn't get used, because I don't want it to, but because no ever goes in there even when family comes over. I'm not sure why, but everyone always gathers in the family room or eat in kitchen.

Just like black in every room makes a good accent color in some way, I kind of feel the same way about having some metal in each room, too, so I say try the floor lamp you posted.

Here is the other thing, and I am trying to save you money at the same time.....if you go back to what sandraclark mentioned, the chairs almost touching really would work in that corner....those two people sit and have drinks AND visit with the couch....those two people can even be you and hubby for Happy Hour. Then you do not need a new rug, as I agree this rug would still work and your current coffee table works fine in front of just the couch. AND the lamp and table get to stay beside the couch, so the tall plant can stay in the other corner. Cost? NOTHING. Coziness? Everything. The art works. The drapes work. The patterned pillows work.

Ok, Abbyjean, I'll try that floor lamp. Also, should I add one of these pillows back on the couch? Or find another accent one? The pillow actually has gold in it as well, but you can't see it while it's sitting on the couch.

Ok, I get everyone's point about the two chairs. However, it blocks the vent and hubby said we can't do that and it really doesn't look right that way. I wish you all could see that view in person, but it really doesn't look right. The In person view, the chairs are too big for that corner, but the main thing, it's going to block the vent.

I thought the room looked cozy with the chairs directly across from the couch. I would just pull them in a little closer. The art is not adding to a cozy look IMHO. I would get a couple of small watercolors to put on the wall between the windows and maybe a small console to go underneath.

Can the vent be painted the same color as the wall? Do you have the paint?

Abbyjean, yes it can be painted and yes we have the paint. However, you asked me earlier did that set up look right. By view of these photos it appears that way, but it does not in person. If it did, that would have been my first choice. With smaller chairs it absolutely would, because we had smaller chairs there before, but gave that set to my mother in law. Also, are you saying add both of the pattern pillows back to the sofa?

Ashtonchic, what do you mean the wall at doesn't add a cozy feel? Doesn't the room as a whole make a room have a cozy feel?

Karen Dumont, thanks for your comments. I tell ya one thing, decorating isn't the easiest thing, but I'm trying. Im very thankful for all of the suggestions. I'll add the other pillows back to the couch, a floor lamp, photos, a throw and candles. I think those little touches will make a huge difference.

Yay, I love those pillows back on the couch. They brighten the space up and tie the ivory in from the rug color. Keep it as it is now, add your floor lamp, some candles, and other accessories, and post a picture when your finished!

I think your room looks cozy except for the artwork! To me it has too many brown tones in it. And I love your pillows. Here are a few art pieces that I think would add to the coziness. All very reasonable on Etsy.

These are warmer and brighter colors and will add cheerfulness to the room. I would pick up on the colors in the artwork to spread around the room - flowers on the coffee table, things in the lamps. The lamp tables look good next to the couch rather than the plant. Bring the chairs closer to the couch. Have them 18" from the coffee table or ottoman also. Paint appears a little dark also. Don't know how much you want to do given you don't use the room much but you could paint room in a brighter color. You don't really need the plants in the room if you don't want them there. If you want them, you could get another, pot them up and put between windows. Also like the floor lamp you posted.

Everything is very nice even the art above the sofa but the size of it is not for that space ,I would use a rectangular piece on that wall ,the other picture that you have looks perfect because the full length of the wall compliments it .
