I'd remove the cubby piece of furniture and go round. It will be more inviting, more condusive to conversation and will break up all the squarish-ness in the cabinetry and flooring. To seat 8 you will need a 72" table, and with 10 it will be crowded and a little tight. You'll probably need a larger chandelier for bigger table. Good excuse, huh?

sitting at a round table with 8-10 people isnt very chatty, (think wedding reception, where the other people are way on the other side) nor is it easy to reach across to pass if you dont have a chinese restaurant style lazy susan. rectangular works better, in my view.

"Pass the salt, please," generally means to pass it from one person to the next until the item reaches the person who requested it. Don't worry about that, and for casual family meals, a separate lazy Susan can be added to the center of the table.

last concern: how many places at the counter? enough for 5 to sit down? as 5 people at a round table meant for 8-10 feels a bit lonely.

Thank you for your comments. I need the cubbies for kid stuff. No where else for it to go so it has to stay. Also no one sits at the bar as it makes the family room feel too cramped. I generally use it for appetizers

So you can't go round. It will take a 9 foot table that is 38-42" wide to place 10 chairs. Use painter's tape on the floor to tape out a rectangle that size and see how it will fit your space.

The space is 12x14. I need 48 inches to the table from the wall or cabinet right?

Table size plus 24" all around for chair scoot and sit space, yet no hitting walls or furniture on the walls.

Turning the table the other way will help offset the long rectangular feel...looks like you have the room for it.

For practical purposes, get a table that fits your family and everyday seating needs but with leaves or extensions. You can also go oval to add the curves.

Seating for 8-10 for holidays is only a few times per year. Perhaps decide how much seating you need on a daily basis and purchase a table based on that decision?

We are painting the cabinets the white chip color of the built in bookcase and the staining the vent hood and the cabinet right below a darker wood tone to match hardwood floors in the adjacent room. I have bronze hardware in the house so we will be adding bronze pulls and knobs to cabinets. If I took the storage out would you put a round?

if possible find a table that expands. A rectangular table will work better in this space rather than a circular table. change the direction the table is in now and make it perpendicular to the countertops. the cubby should be moved to utilize the space

Thank you. My kiddos like to see the tv in the adjacent room that is why the table is turned. A home with small children cubbies are mandatory. No other place to hide colors coloring books puzzles etc. I found an expandable rectangle. Will post pics when project is finished

Another option to allow for a larger table would be to replace the cubby shelves with a storage bench that holds the kids' items and works as seating at the table.

have you considered painting your table white and keeping your dark chairs. Your current table seems to fit well in the space.
