Butcher Block or Laminate for very Entry Level Home?

We need to replace our laminate countertops after rearranging some cabinets and adding a dishwasher. I found a really great deal on butcher block from a local company and it would cost around $650 for all the countertops and a 4" butcher block backsplash. The laminate on the other hand will cost around $1000. We only spent $65,000 on this starter home so spending anything more is out of the question. Although, we don't plan on selling right away... Which would buyers prefer?

Around the sink, I'll always choose laminate over butcher block (which just doesn't hold up with constant water). If there is a separate area such as an island, you could make that butcher block and the rest a well-coordinated laminate. But my choice would be 100% laminate.

in 5 years the next buyer would see laminate in good condition vs used butcher block. i'd go laminate.

Search the Internet for laminate that looks like granite. It's very surprising how good they look. Go for laminate. Butcher block require maintenance and you have to be content with the imperfections over time. Not every potential buyer down the road will want to take that on.

You can mix it up if you have a lot to do. Use laminate around the sink and carry it over to the stove if close by. If there is a separate counter or island, you can use the butcher block. Picture below shows a mix of countertops.

There are some nice looking laminates out now.
