I just plant mine out in the garden as soon as the flowers finish. You don't need to wait for the leaves to wither. They will flower next year but they will never be as full and big as the first year. I actually like their daintier outdoor selves. So I would buy fresh bulbs in the Autumn for your containers and put these old ones in the garden. All the hyacinths in this picture started life in glasses.

It would but they'd need to be kept outside and next year's flowers would not be as big as this year. If you have very hard Winters the bulbs should be OK but the pots might break.
