Maybe a light plastic tray to sit them on and smaller violets?

They are all minis but I am using the jelly jars as self watering pots.

Maybe use deli containers instead?

I wouldn't trust the rods alone myself; blocking under each end with a painted board would work though. You could even have a piece of plexiglass cut at your local hardware instead of a tray to make a level surface on top of the rods - that would show less and show off the pretty jelly jar self waterers instead.

i dont know if i would trust them either. even shower rods come tumbling down sometimes!

Hanging a shelf might be safer in terms of not being knocked over.

Penneys has pretty good tension rods. You could try them. They are sturdier than the thin ones - they are oval. They come as long as 48-72". I would be cautious as to the weight on them but it seems like it would work. Put them flat (sideways). I have trouble getting them out of the window. I wouldn't daisy-chain them.

I get tense just thinking about tension rods holding up a shelf! I love the glass shelves that Suyoder's hubby custom built for her.

I like cooperdr's idea to hang a shelf.

I would certainly test them but a rod that will support 6' of curtain is substantial. My window frames are solid wood too so I would have no issue with a relatively short span and a light weight shelf - possibly the plastic grid would be a choice to lessen weight. Again, not dollar store rods but the oval ones like Bali or Penneys.
