1950s kitchen needs a jolt

We just purchased a house with a kitchen from the 50's: Brown Formica cabinets and white backsplash/counter, including built in can opener, wall clock, nutone food center on counter and paper towel/foil/plastic storage unit installed in wall near cooktop. But it's all in such good shape, I don't want to change out cabinets yet...because it is just too funky. The house is in Wildwood, NJ, the original location of '50s Doo-Wop music. What can I do to give the room some pop while keeping it all tongue in cheek? I was thinking new stainless cabinet pulls (the cabinets are all trimmed in stainless steel) and perhaps a 'wallies' type of removable wallcovering that could brighten the backsplash.

Anyone else faced with similar challenge? How did you handle it?
