Bedroom colour

We'd like to paint our bedroom a chestnut colour leaving the ceiling white. Our bed is taupe colour and we have one mahogany writing desk, a pale green chest of drawers, a small gilded console, and light parquet floor. Our bed is taupe. What is your advice on room colour? Thank you.

Cozy nest! Keep your chestnut color light. Sometimes, it can be just as effective in a low-ceilinged space to keep the walls and ceiling one color, OR to bring the lighter ceiling color down on to the walls. Both techniques are meant to fool the eye. See Houzz photos under "attic bedroom" for examples.

I suggest an almond color closer to the lightest tones of the flooring.

I also suggest a larger and taller bench for the bottom of the bed that can hold your excess pillows at night and winter linens in the summer months. I would get one in a wood tone that resembles the tones and the styling of the other furniture pieces. If you are lucky you may be able to find a great vintage coffee table or hope chest that will work perfectly.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Would you recommend painting the whole room the same colour or ceiling and slopes a lighter shade?

To add some drama to the room, using the same color tone paint the ceiling and window recesses a few shades (barely visable) darker than the walls. Leave the trim white.

How attached to the chair molding over the windows are you? I think you might remove those and, in addition to a slight darkening if you like, might go up one sheen for the angled sections to help bounce more light into the space.

I would paint the same color everywhere...you will see variations on the ceiling and angled walls depending on where the light hits. I would also use the same sheen unless the ceiling is in rough shape, then I would do that in a flat and do the walls in satin or eggshell.

Agree, keep it on the lighter side of a chestnut color. Your room is so cozy, but I wouldn't paint the walls too dark. Here are some examples of rooms that remind me of yours. In the first picture, notice they painted the ceiling white. In the second picture, they painted both the walls and ceiling the same color as suggested by sooz001. Both look beautiful! Also like the use of wallpaper as an accent. Maybe this is something you could do. Consider a chandelier if you don't already have one. Great space! Have fun decorating.
