Do you have a local demand?

They sound interesting, but also sound like something I can't grow here.

Actually, I do. I supply a restaurant whose chef always includes lots of foraged items like wild mushrooms, fiddle head ferns, etc. on his menu. I found a supply for ramps at Pinetree and thought I'd try them since I have plenty of woods. We haven't had the best conditions for them the last two years, and they haven't spread the way I had hoped but they have survived. They are one of the first plants to come up in spring and should be coming up any day.

The thing about growing ramps is they take years before you can harvest them. Not sure exactly how long from bulbs, but it's a good ten years from seed. Things like that generally don't spread right away. What's the old expression? I think it goes, "The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps." But that's for most perennials. I don't know that ramps ever leap. More of a slow and steady wins the race. I LOVE them though! I hope you have good luck with them! They are soooo good.

Thanks for the info. I'm not surprised they take awhile to get established. A lot of woodland plants do--like ginseng. I have a lot of that planted as well. If nothing else, I'll have some delicacies for myself.
