I would consider adding a throw blanket or a twin blanket and running it down the middle of the sofa. That way you can hide the dash lines. Can she do a small area rug? If so maybe a jute rug? World Market was having a sale on all kinds of solid colors and I saw that overstock was as well. It is hard to say what color for the pillows. I would have to play with it first. Since she already has black furniture I would get a black side table and a clear base for the lamp or a weathered wood base for the lamp. Gosh, I feel like I am really not helping. It is hard to say without seeing the entire room.

Maybe some rooms using striped sofas will help inspire you. I'd think about going coastal, or work in some navy or, if it's her taste, even orange.

Slip cover the couch for sure!

If it's a studio, is this a sleeper? If so, you wouldn't want to slipcover it....

I would use an off white for the walls and I agree with a slip cover for the couch if possible, since she's by the beach you want to lighten up the place with whites & very pale blues, she can start collecting shells & driftwood to decorate with, wont cost her a thing....

What color are the stripes?

Stripes are a tan gold. I think she is going to get a slip cover and it is a sleeper but only on occasion when friends and family visit from the East and she will need to remove it then. (Hope I get to use it soon!)

This is unreal. She just picked up the sofa for $50 and this is what it looks like. Fabulous find and cream and navy not gold and tan! It is a sleeper sofa and just perfect! Thanks for the advise and all's well that ends well and thank goodness that picture was off.

That is an awesome find for $50 - I would not slip cover it. Here in rural eastern Kentucky, it would be so easy to find a woodworker to make that table REALLY cheap. They do love building their "primitive" pieces - most would never see it as "coastal" :) She might find something in a flea market or one of those "Peddlars Mall" type places.

Great looks nosoccer, but DIY to that extent not a good idea for her. Painting maybe. How about a distressed white wicker trunk or a rattan trunk with a whitewash? Hard to come by online. Overstock has many trunks but some expensive but not really "it".
