Leena,
Your plant appears to me like it never developed its root system, probably because it was kept too dry too long. Was it a seedling when you got it? i.e. less than a year old? When you dug it out, did you remove a lot of dead roots that were mushy or were they dessicated?

Not knowing what kind of conditions led to this, I would try to pot it up in a small pot of one part potting soil and one part of whatever you use to speed up drainage (perlite, crushed pumice, crushed lava rocks). Water it once, leave it in a warm, bright but shaded area and see if it plumps up. That remaining root looks like it might still have some life in it.

P.S. Feeling like an idiot, I looked up Chennai. How I got this old not knowing about this city, I do not know! But the relevant information is that you are in what is known as the thermal equator. Your plant will like that!

Thanks Pagan for the reply.I had bought my plant from a nursery so I have no idea whether it was grown from a seed..As seen in the pic. those are the only roots the plant had.there was nothing mushy or dead.my plant is growing but it is just growing long ..

Your plant is definitely grown from seed, Leena. My problem with the way it looks is that the base of the caudex might be too far gone to rehydrate. You can try doing what I suggested, I wouldn't personally get my hopes up. But then, some growers here have made their plants recover from worse. Supposedly, it just takes patience which I do not have the genes for lol.
If someone else here has other rescue ideas, hopefully they'll chime in.

Leena, My thoughts for your plant are those of Pagan's. I think in the dry/hot conditions in your country. The roots could just start to atrophy and become shriveled without necessarily becoming moist & mushy.

I had received one from a fella here and it had a somewhat sunken appearance and it never filled out and became plump looking.

I believe that once they get to this point, there is not return to original self.

You are fortunate to have some very qualified and knowledgeable growers in your country. NRSundaram and Jalandar Reddy both from India have wonderful plants.
