Monika, The cabinet in the picture does not have a top on it. In my case I attached a piece of 1.5 inch granite to hold the washer and dryer. Please let me know if this answers your question.

It just seems that with the granite and the washer and dryer that the cabinet would fall apart-- it's soooo much weight… I'm looking to do the same thing but am a bit concerned about the weight. Did you do any special reinforcing? Thank you for taking your time to answer.

A bottom cabinet that is purchased from Lowes, HD, IKEA, etc. is normally constructed using 3/8 particle board for the sides/back. I used 3/4 cabinet grade plywood for the sides and back and planed down 4/4 maple hardwood for the front. The cabinet is very heavy even when the drawers are not in place. The weight of a washer and dryer are no where near the capacity of the cabinet. Hopefully this helps, please let me know?

The capacity of the cabinet is significantly greater then the weight of both machines in addition to the water and 2 full loads of clothes.
