There seem to be roses that are hard enough to root that own-root nurseries have trouble propagating them. So finding them in stock requires a lot of luck. Mine came from Pickering, and it just took ordering in January.

Hortico has been known to carry it.

Also, R. hugonis shows up reliably at a particular high end local nursery. It doesn't have tags from any of the rose suppliers, and seems to come from a wholesale shrubber. It may well be worth your while to search some ornamental woody plant suppliers. I would remember if it was a big place like Monrovia, and it may very well be a small east coast firm, but the large, indestructible species roses are out there.

It's famously difficult to root. Marissa at Greenmantle has a 2 year or so waiting list, but she does have the real thing.

I have a couple from Pickerings & am happy to supply budwood to you if you want, but I can't root the dang thing, either, & believe me, I've tried.

I don't think there's a devils chance I could do anything with it if you did, blue girl. I have rooting compound, but I've never rooted anything before in my life. This sounds like it would be a terribly disappointing place to try and start.

There's a wild rose in a forest near me I have plans to try for, though. She has a wonderful smell and grows, blooming, in some pretty dense shade.
