Three Cybister teasers

Here are three in bud I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing
in bloom, as they are all new for me.

This first is a Lima x Lima from a 2012 cross. I tried a few times without success but a few
seedlings were produced from a 2012 cross.
Nearly there now. Since this is
Lima x Lima, I’m assuming the offspring will look like Lima too. This one has a strangely blotched stem and I’m
wondering if that is a virus.

The second one is Lima x Jewel. I can’t begin to imagine what it will look
like. Could it be somewhere intermediate
between the two parents? Maybe, but there
are so many genes sloshing around in there that it might not be an In-betweener
but just a non-descript red. This one is
eagerly awaited – six years old and finally almost in flower for the first time.

The third is a cross between a dark red hybrid and Cybister
Rose – the first time I’ve managed to get anything from Cybister Rose. Again, the anticipation is building up.

(Sorry I can't seem to work out how to get the orientation right)

Can't wait to see these blooms.

I am hoping some of my crosses bloom this year....seems to take forever! I know they'd do better if I planted them in the ground, but virus is rampant around here (everyone in the neighborhood with hippeastrum in flower beds have plants with very mosaic-patterned leaves), so I do my best to protect my bulbs and manage them in pots.

Yes, this is exciting!! Cybisters are my favorites and yes, the first one does look virused, it's showing on the leaves too if I'm not mistaken but the flower should be OK, can't wait to see them!

Disappointing results I’m afraid. The Lima x Lima did flower, so that does show
that it can be done. However, the plant
looks weak and the flowers only lasted for a single day before dying (but not
before I’d taken some pollen for the giraffe).
It was very skinny and actually looked more like night star to me. As metioned, it was rather badly virused, so
I’ll probably give it away (to someone I don’t like very much!).

The dark red x cybister rose looked like any ordinary red
hybrid, and either the cybister rose genes have been swamped by red ones, or
there was somehow a mix-up with the identity.
Here’s what it turned out like – pleasant enough but definitely very
ordinary.

The most eagerly anticipated was the Lima x jewel from 2009, which
finally threw up a scape after 6 years.
It got as far as this, and then withered and died.

One positive note is that I have a few Lima x jewel seedlings
from 2014 which are looking very healthy and vigorous. So another few years might finally reveal the
secret.

More bad news on the cybister front – Cybister Rose, Bogota,
Chico and Sumatra have all succumbed to an infection of what I think are some
small cockroaches which ate away the roots, and they all appear to be dying or
dead. Chico's genes live on in a rather nice
hybrid, though, Chico x Carmen, with a pleasant shape and colour:
