The rugs do not need to be the same, but need to have similarities. Repetition is the "key" to making the rugs work together, using similar colours and patterns (or prints). Having each rug a little different will add interest to your decor.

Congratulations on your home. What a beautiful space you have and what fun you will have making it your own. I agree with you. You need three rugs. This will help add warmth, personality and define the spaces. The rugs should have different designs, as you definitely do not want them all matching. Even though these rugs shown above are very different, they still work well together. I think some transitional rugs would suit your home.
