Google 'wind swirls'

Here is a picture. I was going to put them in straight rows, but DH wanted them staggered. I am adding a solid blue border before quilting.

It looks great! I concur with the swirls. I first thought waves, but the wind swirls thought covers more than the water.

So very cute...I do like the staggered boats...looks like a true pic of sailing. Wind could be a straight force on some, swirling on others, calm wavy breeze or circling like a tornado...lots of options if you want something a little different on each.

Alternating with your swirls, you can do some curved lines - make them not quite parallel and not straight at all - just gentle curves, not like "s" curves.

I did the first row of boats with swirls and DD said they should all be swirls. So swirls it is. I am 3/4 finished. Tomorrow I should be able to finish it.

I am late to the Sailboat Race! All Swirls is perfect for the wind. Too many kinds of wind would make this sailor nervous! :)

Bev, your quilt is adorable! I think you did the right thing with all swirls. I'm glad all the boats are headed in the same direction, otherwise there could have been a collision on the race course. Marsha, I love your comment about the wind.
