    This is called dwarf mondo.

    Ophiopogon japonicus "Nana"

When it does spread, it can be defined in it's parameters, then that which you cut out can be used elsewhere. reliable , but needs climates of Zone 7 or greater.

I have been considering this variety for a spot in my yard under a big tree. It drops leaves all the time so the ground cover has to tolerate raking or a leaf blower.

Once established (rooted in), it's great for blowing over.

That's what I figured. The irony is that I had grass there before but got rid of it because of the drought but never thought about the tree and the constant leaf situation. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!
