In my area it is the large tiles on the diagonal. Less grout to fuss with too

i am in south florida; does that mean a certain style area?

I like large format tile 12 x 24 or larger laid with no stagger for a more contemopary clean look and the larger the tile the fewer grout lines.

I think diagonal is great ifyou have a tuscan look, but awful if not. What is your home's style? What is your furniture preference? Colors . . you can do so much with tile or go so bad . . get a pro to help you decide . . it is a big and permanent decision.

I have to disagree with libradesigneye.... Our style is what I would call "mid century/oriental/eclectic" and the tile is on the diagonal. "Tuscan" is probably the last word that comes to mind looking at it. We have large oriental rugs on top of it in each room. I think the diagonal helps the eye move forward, opening up the room...which, when its a fairly narrow condo great room, helps it look larger.

For sure go 24" tiles. Why tiles? Why not laminate same price. Because less labor. There are all so ceramic wood looking tile that are very nice. And very popular now.

Consider ceramic plank rather than square. Some comes in wood grain. Gorgeous. In that case install vertical.
