Austen's anyone?

I know Riki grows a lot of Austen's in zone 4. Anyone else in our cold zones give them a try? I just ordered some. Some own root (the rest are on Dr. Huey unfortunately as that was all I could get. My question is have you grown any with that rootstock? Or had luck with ownroot? I sure wish I could find someone in the U.S that uses multiflora rootstock. If it wouldn't be too much trouble could you list the names of some you grow? I can always add to my order LOL. I don't know maybe on the grafted I should put some of them in pots and overwinter in the garage.

I got advised on the other forum that there are roses hardy hardy enough for my zone. Sigh...if only that was enough. All I ask for is zone 5 roses. I am too old for anyone to talk any sense into me now anyway so I am going for it. I'm not expecting them to be cane hardy, just alive in the spring.

Plus I got them with the 25percent off code. How could I pass that up.

Hi, I grow Tamora, grafted to multiflora.

However it has the myrrh fragrance. Not everybody likes that scent.

For "tender" roses you need to plant the bud union 4-6" below soil level.
That's a lot of digging.

According to Austin, these roses are Hardy to zone 4. Can't help you with zone 3 though....

I do not grow them... yet. They are certainly on my wishlist!

I have read from a few on this forum that have has success with LD Braithwaite, Crocus Rose, and St. Cecilia. Not sure if you have read these already, but I find these helpful:

I would like to try them on multiflora but don't really have a source for them on that. Yes I agree digging them down and burying them six inches is a lot of work. I did that for a bunch of mine. Not so bad though, I give hubby the bottom half of the hole. I seen at the hardware store the have what looks like an industrial ice auger you can rent, anyone try one of those?

I have not used an ice auger for the garden, however, we have rented an earth auger for fence posts. For digging soil, I hear that a mattock or pick axe is one of the ideal hand-tools for digging holes, http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/1627308/can-you-recommend-a-digging-tool-for-my-crazy-soil

I haven't tried, but have heard of the use of demolition hammers if you want to get into power tools.

Prairie north..I bet that that was what I was looking at was for digging fence post holes. It's not like my soil is hard to dig...no rocks or clay..I was just looking for an easy way to dig the holes as I am going to need quite a few.
