So did you move the kitchen to a bathroom? Whatever you did, I like it much better as that shelf over the sink looks like you'd be bumping into it if you leaned over to wash a pot.

The whole thing looks very, very nice! I'm sure you'll enjoy it for years to come.

The previous owners had taken about a third of the kitchen and added a full bath. Because this is the main floor and we have two other full baths, we scaled it back to a half bath and opened up the kitchen to spam the whole width of the house.

I think it looks nice! I do have to say I'm not crazy about the range placement though. How do the owners like the downdraft? I'll never have another one - it just doesn't get the job done like a hood.

Julie - I agree about the downdraft - it doesn't compare to a hood. But because we were stuck with the vertical element of the chimney we didn't want another vertical hanging down over the island. We thought it would look too busy. And we did try to find another spot for the range, but there just wasn't any other wall space available.

It amazes me how HGTV and DIY channels touted how great and unique down drafts were when they first came on the scene. A couple of people I know have had the same experience as you. Thanks for sharing. Your kitchen is lovely BTW.

Personally, I love the unusual layout on the kitchen. (As a previous homeowner of a historic home, I understand how difficult it is to lay out a modern kitchen in an old house!) I can imagine cooking at the stove, facing outward toward the whole family in the living areas, and also having pots of soup or warm appetizers sitting there for guests to enjoy buffet-style. And the refinished floors are gorgeous! Nice work.

I'm SO glad you stayed true to the character of your beautiful vintage home! It's fresh & appealing without being 'cutesy' & I think you'll enjoy it for many years to come.

My son & d-i-l are in the process of purchasing a home built in 1920. It's fortunate that not TOO much updating was done over the years, except, alas, in the kitchen. The home, though, has a built -in cabinet like yours in the dining room, original hardwood floors & wonderful high ceilings. They are considering reducing a bath to a half-bath, like you did. Would you mind showing a pic of your bath remodel? Maybe it would give us some much-needed ideas.
