Right now there is a burning almost 90 degree sun. I had to come inside for a break it was beating down so hard, first time this year. Definitely feels like summer is beginning this Memorial Day.

It is pouring down rain here like a cow peeing on a flat rock. Flash floods are happening all over the place. Over 2.5 inches of rain have come down in 30 minutes. The street outside my house looks like I could fly fish for trout right now, and it is not letting up. Hail, and tornadoes are happening to the north of us now.

Well at least it will bring our lake back up some more. After the drought we have had we need all the rain we can get, and then some more.

Summer is here.

INCREDIBLY hot weather in Canada.

I haven't had hardly any rain since I planted my garden a month and a half ago. What little I've gotten didn't even settle the dust! I have been watering (from my well) like crazy and I'm sure my power bill will reflect that! My plants are alive..... well most of them, I lost quite a few, but they aren't growing. Well water is better than public water in my homely opinion, but nothing works like rain! They have been forecasting rain for 4 days now and there has been nothing! They said thunderstorms by 8 AM today, now they are saying 9 PM! Time to drag out the hoses again!

Yes it's been the driest Spring I can remember here. We've had rain like 3 times all Spring. Today they said thunderstorms but again they change their mind. It could definitely be worse though, we could be in Texas or Oklahoma...

It's been rather cool but dry here in the western PNW and have only watered once since plant out day on May 6th. They look great though with many flowers and about hand ball size fruit.

In our corner, where Vince and I am, we usually get some rain, almost all the time. But the amout of is might not be enough to deep water tomatoes. Having covered my RBeds with BPlastic, they don't loose moisture and neither get much of rain water. So I am in control as how much and when to water.
In average each plant need << 1/2 gallon, at this time . So with about 40 plants I fill my 2 gallon watering can 10 times. Later on, when I remove the plastics, I'll use hose with gentle shower head.

Back to Weather:

Today's high : 69F. But starting tomorrow we will have highs in 70s and some low 80s, pretty decent tomato weather.
Yeah , Need some warmth for the tiny fruits to grow.

Very dry here in Long Island, NY. I even don’t remember when was the last time it rained. Probably over 1 month ago.

Anyway, most of my neibors’ lawn are yellow. It happens the SAME thing every year. A few years ago, I told them that 10 minutes of watering per week is not enough, but…Some don't water AT ALL.

Unexplainable HOT weather in Canada (80+’F). Much warmer than in your neck of the wood, sey.

Possible thunderstorms today, but don't hold your breath.

It finally rained last night at 8 !! I got a little over an inch!

Last week: lows in mid-30s, highs in low 60s, overcast and unusually wet (rain every day, though only trace amounts).
This week: lows in the mid-40s, highs in the 80s, mostly sunny. Looks like we go back to our usual pattern of afternoon buildup of thunderheads, though they rarely give any moisture, and when they do chances are it's in the form of hail :(
Gone from below average temps to above average temps in a week. Normally this time of year we begin a more gradual warmup due to the mitigating effects of evaporative cooling from soil moisture, but the ground is already bone dry like you'd expect in August. Predicting a hotter, drier summer than usual, which is kind of scary given our normally hot/dry climate.
Tomatoes are really starting to grow, most are flowering. I may have to take the WOWs off a couple of weeks sooner than I planned. Eggplants and peppers are (finally) in the ground and I saw the first squash bug of the season. Guess that means summer's officially here.

Low to mid 80' the next 5 or 6 days here in the PNW. Perfect.

Finally some rain here in NJ. It was quick but I'll take it since the tomatoes haven't had any water in weeks.

Today we almost hit 80F. But tomorrow will over 80 . The trend is high 70s, more and more. We see a lot more sun, no rain and the night lows average 55F. That is gurrreat.
Today I was doing some tying, weaving, fertilizing and ligh pruning. Almot all my plant have bud and about half of them are in flowers. But other than dwarf HGT, no fruits are visible yet. Maybe this warm weather will help the fruits to grow.

We got like an hours rain. It seems to have helped. Even the trees look greener. Still way short of what is needed though.

Peter, I'm upstate east from you. It rained a little bit on the house (sprinkled for about 20 min), didn't rain at all across the street on the garden. Every one of those storms missed us completely yesterday. We are now 6" short of rainfall for the year so far.

Yes, those storms missed NY state. Pennsylvania did get some nice rain.

Sorry to hear that guys. I am in Rockland county, and we got hit with a thunderstorm belt luckily. Everything was looking nice and after rain green this morning. I hope today sends the rain your way. They are saying heavy rain on Sunday.

So around 5 pm today, the temperature will drop to about 70’

It's raining!!! The rain from Tue. made my garden take off My squash especially, I think they grew about 6" and are setting blooms finally. The weeds loved it too......

Clouds block the sun . Also does some rain. When it clears up , gets warmer again. Here in PNW when it is cloudy, it cools down about 12 degrees. The next day when the sun come out, warms up again. IT IS SOLAR HEAT.
We usually don't get rapid air movement to bring us hot or cold weather. A sunny day is always a warm day here.

Back to topic.
WE had a beautiful sunny and warm day, highs reaching 82F. Tomorrow will be the same. Come Monday/Tuesday , high will be 63/62F : BECAUSE OF CLOUDS AND RAIN. it happens all the time. On the following Thursday the sun returns and temps back up into 76F again...SUN< SUN< SUN

sey, you're joking with that explanation about clouds dropping the temperature 13' F, right ?

You had a broken line of storms ahead of a cold front moving through about that time. I think they were predicting a brief drop in temperature (in your graphic) as the storms moved through from the rain pulling down colder air from much higher elevations.

Clouds on their own wouldn't drop the temperature 13 degrees. Storms pulling down the colder air could.

The storms that moved through were quite scattered, so if you didn't get any, you probably didn't experience any appreciable temperature drop off. Nearby areas that got storms probably did see a drop followed by a quick recovery once the line of storms passed.

Summer came very early this year. We're looking at a five day of 93/93/93/88/79. Oof.

Here in PNW today was summer like. Our high hit 86F. It has been sunny and bright. Perfect tomato weather.
But we will get a couple days cool weather next Tues/Wednesday. Then back to normal by Thursday.

Well Peter, this year I am NOT growing tomatoes - I have a few other VERY important projects - so I only need rain for my lawn.

Some here that grow tomatoes will have "fat" water bills these months.

How much water does a plant of tomato need at a time ?
I estimate about 1/2 gallon each time. But lets take ONE gallon. If yo water once a week that is 4 gallons per month. if you do this for 3 months that will 12 gallons per plant. Now lets make it 14 gallons per plant. That is TWO cubit foot per plant per season . Lets say you have 40 plants (like I do) that will be 80 cubic foot .
I just checked this: In Seattle area average monthly water bill is $38 and that is based on 5.5 ccf ( 550 cu-ft). . so that is like $5.50 per season.I double it again: It is 11 bucks for the whole season. If I triple it again it will be $33 per season for my 40 plants.
If you mulch your plants properly there should be minimal evaporation.

I water my plants where it is needed : at the base, with a gentle shower head..

Here is our long term forecast. It is very nice for early June.

Notice: Our lows are still in mid 50s.

You get the benefit of the mild summer temps though. Over here in the east side I'm probably double that water usage because of the high evapotranspiration rate. Luckily our water costs are next to nothing.

I paid $75 for water last month. :/

I'm fortunate that water is inexpensive here. Last bill was $54 and that covered three months of usage. That'll probably go up to $75-80 for the late summer bill covering three months.

Sey ... compared to many other areas of the country, you probably save on air conditioning costs over the summer months with those mild temps.

Your water bill is reasonable. And of course is not just for watering gardens.
Around here , we don't have air-conditioning system. Maybe less than 5 days in the summer it gets close to 85F. Even then it cools off at night. Like yesterday got up to 84F but the night low was around 55F.

That's a huge plus. You don't have to worry about getting your tomatoes through any 100+ degree heatwaves.

Yes Peter, you're right: the forecast says rain for the next 3 days.

But, when I look at the map, I really don't see that rain...

That big cloud moves to NE, not East, so I highly doubt that there will be any rain...

But who knows, storms can come out of the blue in 20 minutes...

So the highest today will be... 80' F?

We are also heading to rain and cool temps.
In tuesday our high is forecast @ 59F ,,, Wed. 62F.
But then back to 70s and 80s
