I'd just use pressure treated plywood, looks like there are bolt holes in the side and front rails to attach front and side verticals. piece of 2X2 attached for the corners with deck screws. That is, the 2X2 would be placed in the two front corners and screwed to the vertical members. I'd also move the lights and mount them on the outside of the vertical wood sides. For the tailgate, just put a couple of wood strips on each side forming slots to slide it in. Put a removable chain across the rear from side to side to prevent bowing, if the sides bowed out, the tailgate could fall out..

Look at this idea at the address below. I would also consider stakes to hold sides per side in stake holder to the bed. I would also consider adding 4 hinges to top corners as fasteners but pull the pins to remove sides.

A good utility trailer is hard to beat. I built a metal one in 1972 to keep from buying a truck. I could handle the (4’x6’x 12” high sided, 6” high guard rails above sides and front, hinged tail gate, all 16 ga steel trailer) as a wheel barrel if needed. Today the same trailer is (4’X7’, truck leaf springs, 3”X1/4 sq tubing axle and tongue) will easily handle a half cord of firewood with chain-link framed extra side- boards that lay in the trailer until needed.

Loger, good call on using the stake holes. I missed them. :-( Relooking at it, might also consider "shimming" up above the fenders so a bigger bed could be built. Can't tell what that dimension lumber that would have to be though. Just like a barn, no matter how big it seems initially, it's way too small. You might also consider going to a "pallet yard" or somewhere there's a lot of wooden pallets, get a HD one and cut it down for a subfloor and then go from there.

Good points Exmar! When we start early we have no idea what the future might bring. We built a friend a 4’X6’ to pull behind his VW using VW spindles to share tires about1980. His tiller rode on the 72VW’s bumper about 400 mi (round trip) on weekends to work when gardening at his parents. Now he is into Real Estate with a Zero Turn Dixon to cut approx 10 acres of properties (vacant lots and homes).

That led to modifying his trailer to transport the mover. After I challenged to find a used trailer less than the 900.00 new prices he reported finding. After I shopped over 3 hrs to see what he was seeing was a new reality since my building days. I told him in 07 we needed to quarter his trailer and re-weld/assembly it into a 5’X7’ (in 2 half days or one day and we chose two half’s that worked).

I’ll suggest if more width is need “at times and will work”, extend the present just above fenders (vs the floor) to keep the trailer useful and versatile. LOL!
