Looking for a new "top box" for my tool chest.

My old one died of old, old age and I didn't replace it. Finally decided to replace it as I'm tired of not finding the socket, etc. that I need. Looking around, it seems that like everything else, they're either cheap junk or Xpensive and maybe questinable at that. I don't usually buy "inexpensive" tools, but given my age and condition, doubt if I'll be rebuilding many more engines, etc. so a "homeowners" would be ok for my use now.

Looked at the local sears, nope. Lowe's and Amazon didn't offer much, surprised to see that HD has a good selection under $150 with free shipping. This one caught my eye.

Stanley isn't top of the line, but for my use, may be OK. Noticed it had gas struts (to open the lid?) and ball bearings. Saw one at Sears yesterday, slightly less money that had "nylon glides?"

Where else should I look?

I see that you are probably out in the country. I used to like going to estate auctions. Of course it takes a lot of time but can be entertaining. You would probably find the 'real thing' at one of those, and plenty more tools to fill up more ;-)

Chas, yep, I used to like going to those when I lived in the city, time permitting. Here in the country they're called "barn sales" and interestingly enough, most of them have more furniture, crockery, etc. than "barn" stuff. :)

Had quite the "journey of discovery" and after looking online, locally, etc. finally found a source of "decent" mechanics chests. Home Depot. They have a good online assortment, free shipping to a local store, and free home shipping for the "less expensive" units.

I ordered a "Husky" six drawer, 46" H, 16" D, 26" wide. 180 reviews, average was four out of five stars. $104.22 delivered to my local HD. Husky also has a two year warranty, if that means anything.

Drove down to Huntington, W.Va. to pick it up. I'm beyond pleased. I think I paid about a $1 per pound on this. Very heavy duty, also noticed in the "manual" that the warranty is 3 years. Now my barn is getting all organized and I can actually lay my hands on stuff. Now what do I do with all the excess sockets, wrenches, etc. I've accumulated over 60+ years? :-)
