If you have extra sets left over from planting your main crop, use the others for green onions. Plant them close together, perhaps even in pots if you've got no garden space left, and pull them whenever you want. It's doubtful they'd last another year, regardless of how you store them (and keeping them in the fridge would only cause them to bolt once planted).

My garden is partially shaded so my onions never get very big so I only grow them as green onions. The problem is that if I planted them all at once I would end up with way to many green onions to eat. So I figured I would do succession planting.

as a market gardener , I use the sets as long as possible for succession planting. I have no secret as to store them but I have planted some pretty ugly ones and they still grew. I also keep buying them in the store till they run out. they usually get cheaper in june.

I always buy lots of extra bulbs in the spring to use as green onions in the fall. I put them in a paper bag in the crisper of my fridge. I'll usually start fall onions late Aug/early Sept. A few will mold, but most are in good shape.

Put them in the fridge, in the dark. They may get long and yucky looking, but they will store. I just keep picking out the ones that have sprouted and plant them each time. I plant sets for green onions too. That reminds me, I need to buy extra sets now and put them in the walk in cooler.
